RIP Bob Babbitt. I remember growing up as a kid in West Philly turning up the radio everytime they played Scorpio. And if you caught the right show they would play the whole bass solo. If you could play Scorpio and play the bass solo, you could play. For many a bass player from my era in Philly that was an audition song to get into a funk band.

He had a brain tumor. Hasn't been confirmed, but most likely that was the cause of his death.
