body or neck?

Pickups, preamp, strings, pickup placement and height, neck (neck wood, freboard and fret material).

I would never point the body as relevant to the tone, sustain and balance yes, but not tone.

Not to mention player's technique counts a lot. Same bass played by two or 3 different players with different approach and style will never sound close to each other
