My original TBX was replaced by a tech who probably didn't realize I'd prefer to keep it original. And unfortunately I don't have any gut shots of before the change.

I do like the sound now. It does record really well- probably just lace pickups. But I think I'd like to get one to test.

Anyone have a shot of the original TBX wiring? Also is the fender TBX pot sold today the same or similar capacitance?

TBX pots (still available) are commonly found on eBay, cost about $12 and are easy to install.

When I replaced the stock fenders in my PJ boner with Bartolini's the tech used a regular pot for tone control. Also the Barts couldn't be wired with the series/parallel switch for the P pickup. I didn't miss either.

I've seen that article. Anyone know the wiring diag for these basses? Mine is the P-bass version. Might just be living with my non-stock version even though I've had it since it was sold new.

Oh and TBX controls appear to be sold from Fender at places like Guitar Center with the resistor.

I read the whole thread at one time- but had not remembered the wiring diag. Still wish I'd taken the gut shot, but I can now probably put it back to stock.

Here's my 1989 Jazz Bass, taking a rest from recording in the studio earlier this year. I bought this brand new back in 1989 as an upgrade from a trusty Japanese Squire Jazz. I kept the Squire as a back up for a few years but regretfully sold in about 1994. Wish I hadn't.
It's 100% stock and I still love it. Does that get me into the club?

I've always played it through the Marshall 3530 and 1540 can you can see in the background which I bought new around the same time.

i have a 1992 Longhorn bass with broken trussrod rod nut.

i've Tried two Fender original replacement nuts same size but none of them winds properly on the original thread.

Does someone of you knows its perfect replacement or should I give up?

I just picked up a 1993, looks great! I really like the tones you can get, especially with the tbx. I have never had a bass with one, but for a passive piece of hardware it does some cool stuff. Not heavy at all, but I also have a T-40 in the rotation so everything is light by comparison. I also just like basses that are a bit of an oddball or outside the norm, the differences really struck me. I didn't even know they existed until this forum came up randomly for me this past year!

the only things I am not sure about are the strat style knobs, whenever I see them on a bass I always wonder if it was a cost-cutting measure over aesthetics. However, the numbers are useful for a visual on the tbx I suppose. However, if it was penny-pinching on a mass scale it seems funny considering they had to retool to make the instruments. It also needs a truss adjustment and neck angle adjustment (also love the micro-tilt!).

Good day to you all. Here for submission is a 92 of the P type. It is waiting for a brand new set of pickups that are being made (slowly, but he's one guy) right now, and should arrive in a month or so. It has the greatest neck I've ever played - feels P like, wide, but with this slimmer, jazzy feeling. One day (hopefully thousands of gigs from now) when I go to the great gig in the sky, one of my Kids will inherit it if I don't make them bury it with me. Depends on how well they can play.

No numbers here but glad to have another A/S J player post pics of their bass. And the original owner from '89!

Good looking bass in "like new" condition! I agree that the A/S had a lot going for it. As yours is so pristine, I wouldn't change a thing - it looks good with the black numbered Strat knobs. Fender/CBS first did that on late '70s J's so I don't think it was a cost-cutting move, I think it's designer George Blanda spec'd them specifically for the bass.

So is it the Precision Bass Plus that originally had Lace Sensor pu's? If so '92 was its last year in production. ('89-'92) The American Standard and Plus series were known for having a flatter neck radius. It's what I like about my own '93 A/S 22 fret J.

Realized I hadn't posted a pic of my '93 A/S J after I stripped the (original) Lipstick Red finish (post #678/page34). I decided to install a '93 Fender/Kubicki 9v pre in it while I was at it, which could have been from a FCS Kubicki Ex-Factor or the Fender Jazz + of the same period. (early '90s) Great sounding pre. Also had MJT do the relic'd nitro Burgundy Mist Metallic finish. Came out great and it sounds amazing - couldn't be happier.

Yeah, that's the one. Funny thing is I was torn between this and a jazz bass hanging beside it. Looked at both, played both and could not decide. But I had had gear stolen, had gigs, rehearsals, etc so had to stop waffling. Couldn't afford both of course. Then I thought about the P, and It was the neck that made it so I could walk away from the Jazz(Marcus Miller, I think, it was natural and also played sweet. And I need the P pup as well. Saw a Jazz on FB recently here in Ontario, but couldn't swing the cash (All venues still shut, no work at all). Pickups I could do.

Nice! Yes, you are correct - it is the gunmetal colour which leans toward blue when new and due to aging/amber'ing it looks green. I think it's a cool colour and I personally like it better than its original blueish hue. (YOMV)

I have had zero issues with my '93 A/S J tr - which is the same as on all these basses. You should really like the bass - one of the first P/J's Fender did. 22 fret full length fb, great lockable adjustment bridge and the Schaller Deluxe F-stamped tuners are among my favorites. You'll have to decide how you like the pu's as I replaced mine with NJ4's, mostly due to the neck pu failing. Once you get it post a review of your impressions here -

Congratulations! I have a 92 Precision Plus (bought new) and a 93 Jazz Plus. Never had an issue with the necks or truss rods. The P is in fact ridiculously stable. In nearly 30 years I've only had to make truss adjustments a couple of times.
