Boogaloo Bass 101

Well as long as I've been playing, I've considered the boogaloo to be bass parts that sound like what Carol Kaye wrote in her books, which are busy soul grooves a la Jemmott and Rainey. And apparently I'm not the only one, since Justin and Pops and others in this thread do, too. And the Latin players were just trying to incorporate soul grooves into Latin pop music and calling it boogaloo.

Justin ....I just listened to the track from the Ocean's 13 soundtrack and was wondering what records Holmes put on . I really love this kind of music...funky..eerie...relaxing. I could imagine that it was some old dusted off vinyl that he put on. Do you know of any albums specifically that he played for you? These tracks sound like it was a lot of fun to record these.

Just by chance heard a little bit of an old Redd Kross album today, and figured this thread could use a Steven McDonald bump! If you aren't aware of Steve or his great bass playing, check out Red Kross (which he's been in for a hundred years), recent live Sparks gigs, and, if I'm not mistaken, footage/recordings from a stint as a JMJ stand-in on a Beck tour years ago....oh yeah, and Redd Blood Cells! That's where he grafted his bass playing onto the White Stripes album, and did a bang-up job of it! Really great. Anyhow, I feel the spirit of the boogaloo is alive and well in his playing a great deal of the time.....

Check out the Greyboy Allstars...Especially their live album from 1999 and West Coast Boogaloo (with Fred Wesley). Chris Stillwell is a phenomenal boogaloo bassist. Also check out some of Robert Walter's (Greyboy's keys player) stuff: Spirit of '70, There goes the Neighborhood (with Chuck Rainey on bass)

i just read your questions about the boogaloo style and i can tell you that i spend a lot of the last 8 years or so just listening to old library albums and soundtrack stuff, 1st vinyl from thriftstores, later downloaded from blogspots on the internet. right now i have a selection of 2500 tracks on my harddisc that i picked off those albums. most of the albums only have one or two good tracks on them and i literally had to listen to thousands of albums to get my collection up to 8 gigabytes of listenable tracks with nice vibraphone, fender rhodes, brass, lots of boogaloo style bass groovin' and wordless vocals too. you can find rips of these albums on many blogspot sites made available by these retro fanatics. it is however rather tiresome to go through all of these records and i would rather die than do it again. the reward of all this digging is a jukebox full of cool instrumentals. i use shuffleplay and everytime i play some music in my livingroom or car, i hear a pleasing sound because i left out all the annoying tunes on those albums. just check out

he has a lot to offer concerning this soundtrack/library genre. also check the links to likeminded blogspots that he supplies. whoops is from france and he probably bought the records shared on his blog in a 2ndhand store down the road where he lives or something. you won't believe what you're gonna be hearing..

..but be aware. if you like the sound of these records and get yourself hooked like i did, you are in danger of getting lost in piles and piles of records like this filled with vintage sound. the trouble is that most of these records only contain one or two worthwile/killer tunes so your ears could be getting very tired and upset after a while skipping tunes you don't like and selecting the ones you do.. i am still recovering from these 8 years of obsessively collecting sound pearls and square cheese, as i call them..

all of who like to hear a great bass lesson style boogaloo workout that sounds quite big and great, listen to Carol Kaye album "picking up the e-string" track 6 - boogaloo.
that whole album is starring a fender bass. which one, anyone? that ain't no fender on the cover, is it?
