Booyah! The 1x15 Shootout!

Actually, I was rather struck by how the Tri 115L was one of the least 'fat and old school' of the bunch. Sure, you could get that if you dialed it in (I find Accugroove cabs to be very responsive to EQ, and hence quite flexible, tonally, if you are willing to EQ them), but with things set 'flat', it's probably the most 'modern', clean, open, and 'non-1x15 sounding' of the group.

That's probably an accurate description of the Carvin LS1503 (with a Kappalite 3015LF retrofit woofer) three-way that I'm using - though the treble (tweeter range) is probably more able to keep up with the mids and bass. Is the 15 in the Accugroove still running full range?

Interesting. I've heard that cab live, and it did a good job emulating a sealed multi 10 cab.... which is more to my definition of fat and old school (we are probably talking semantics here)... more talking about the mild treble response and the present upper mids through the paper cone, versus for example, the very present, modern treble response and slightly more scooped tone of the HT115.

Wow, we are hearing it quite differently. I can see where you might be able to EQ the Tri 115L to get the 'sealed 10's' sound, but to my ears, it certainly don't sound that way set flat.

As for the 'scooped' thing, I found the Tri to be comparatively scooped in the low mids, relative to the HT115, and the HT115 would be comparatively scooped in the upper mids, relative to, say, the Glock or Skjold cab. But I personally wouldn't call either the Tri or the HT115 'scooped' - which I generally interpret as meaning a significant 'valley' in the midrange response.

Keep in mind, this is all IME/IMHO, and YMMV.

I think again it's semantics.... it's the upper mid paper cone response, combined with the somewhat tight low end of the Tr115, along with a very different treble response than a typical 2 way cab that results in what I'm hearing.

Also, it was interesting that those little tiny tweeters don't seem to do a very good job of projecting upper treble response out into a room versus the more traditional, lower crossed-over two way designs with bigger horns in many cabs. This further reinforces the feeling of a more 'sealed multi 10' cab when you hear this particular cab in a mix without PA support. IMO though.... still one of my favorite Accu cabs!

It sounds great to me, and is probably my favorite 115 cab for that reason.... I guess maybe because it doesn't sound like a 15:D

Perhaps that is what you are hearing, but if someone is reading this thread and looking for a 1x15 to give them a 'fat' and/or 'old school' tone, the Tri 115L would likely be one of the last of the cabs tested that I would recommend.

I really liked the sound of the Tri 115L, but several of the others would do a much better job of dishing out great fat/full, old school vibes, IME/IMHO.

Definitely "scooped" is not a term I'd apply to the Carvin LS1503, anywhere in the low-mids, mid-mids or high-mids... though I realize you were making comparison to other cabs where I quoted from.

As expected, every good answer begets more questions...

Tom: I would looooove to see you do some blind reviews, with someone else playing, or better, someone else setting up the equipment behind a curtain and you taking notes on the "unknowns". Why not go where no reviewer (I've ever read) has gone before, break on through to the other side and make it real (and objective)? IMO this would be a truly huge contribution and is pathetically lacking in the bass world.

Also-a personal cab question. I love my Epi UL2-115. Right now I put an Epi UL2-112 on top (with LMK11 head) but am wondering what a 210 or 2nd 115 would sound like (can't test 'em out B4 buying :-( ). I have an UL210 but it's 4 Ohms and the head won't deal, plus, even with my iAMP500, 2/3 of the juice goes to the 210 and I like the tone but move less air. Will a 2nd 115 sound the same only louder? What would your preferred 2nd cab be in a clean rock/pop setting?

Okay, one other caveat to add to the opening paragraph. :p

I actually think that - impedance mismatch, aside - the UL-310 would make a great cab to pair up with the UL-115. I'll also say that at least from what I heard at NAMM, the UL2-210/UL2-115 combo is very, very nice. I'd also like to try the UL-115 with my T-212D, though that is a 4 ohm cab, and also an impedance mismatch. Maybe I'll try the UL2-112 on top. That is a good suggestion.

My thoughts on the 'best' Epifani option, though, is probably going to be an 8 ohm UL2-210, for impedance reasons, if nothing else.

Nice review!

Tom, can you compare the tone of the older Mesa (EV15L) with the Trace or maybe the Orange? I really like my Diesel 2 x 15 but am getting to old to cart around a 100+lb cab. So I'm looking at getting a couple 1x15s but like that Mesa/EV tone. Any ideas?
