How are you setting the gain and frequency sliders? Where in the chain is it? and what other pedals are you using?
A lot of hum comes from the higher frequencies, don't push them too much.
 
No, you might be confusing hum with hiss. Hiss occupies the very high frequencies. Hum is almost always a ground problem, and the solution is to fix the ground problem, not to avoid using highs (or any other frequencies) on the EQ.

Its with the mention of it happening 'when used with other pedals' that I thought it could be a confusion between hum and hiss, assuming from that statement that it doesn't hum when being used alone.
If it is hum then could it also be a power supply problem?
