Kia ora! I have just finished reading the whole thread and I am almost positive I am getting one of these. At the moment t I am running a Boss MS-3 with an Aftershock and a C4 in the loops, both controlled via midi. After the MS-3 I have a GK Plex, an MXR compressor and a Micro Thumpinator.

Most gigs I go direct from the pedal board to the Soundcraft Ui24 and IEMs.

I think I will keep both SA pedals (I am sure I can control them via midi with the GT1K Core). Question is, will I still need the MXR compressor and the Thumpinator (HPF)? Or are the internal compressor and HPF good enough?

Thanks everyone for all the valuable info and chur to Correlli for all the soundbits!

I emailed Roland Backstage/Boss Support about adding more AIRD Bass Amps, and the reply I got was kind of interesting. Basically they would neither confirm or deny any possible additions like effects or amps, and any future additions are top secret. So I got the impression there will be a Bass Mode update, but I guess just have to wait and see. I think back when the GT 1000 first came out it didn’t have a Bass Mode. From what I’ve seen, major updates come out about once a year, Dec/Jan.

Kia Ora. I had a Keeley Compressor Pro which is similar to the MXR Compressor and found I didn’t need it. The GTCore has a MDP Compressor with a direct mix which is pretty good. The GTCore also has an effect called Master FX, which has limiters, compressor, and enhancers. The AIRD Bass Amp has a SAG parameter which imitates power amp compression. It’s very subtle though. There are a lot of HPF/LPF (low and high cut) settings in the effects, eq’s, and crossover.

That is a little encouraging. Today I busted out my GT1B after having played around with the GT1000core for the past couple weeks. I gotta say, the GT1b sounded better to me.... And the various amp models definitely were part of why. With the GT1000 I find it very hard to get the same variety of basic amp tones that I can get easily with the GT1B. The GT1000 obviously has a lot more flexibility in terms of routing and FX...but...I just haven't really been able to get as good basic bass sounds as what comes easily on the GT1B. If BOSS adds all that capability directly in the GT1000 I will be happy, but at the moment I am considering selling off the GT1000 and stick with the GT1B. I just wish the GT1B had more pro features like what the GT1000core has. Subout, global EQ, IR loading, nicer tuner, a few other things.

I still plan to try to see if I can cop some of the GT1B amp sounds on the GT1000 using EQ, IR's and what not. But generally I have kind of floundered around so far trying to do that and I expect it to be very time consuming and not even sure if I will get it. The SVT setup sounds pretty good on the GT1000. I don't really like the other two amp sims at all...they just have no character whatsoever compared to the GT1B has 360, Bassman, Mark, GK, SVT, Trace Elliot, B15m, Acoustic Bass amp, and a flat amp... and we haven't even talked about the the fact the GT1B has the Bass sim to convert my single coil into humbucker, Acoustic bass, active style pickup sound...and also The GT1B has some better limiter options which sound more transparent then all the compressors on the GT1000 in general.. I think its frankly just a much better sounding unit for bass playing. I know a lot of people think the opposite, but I don't agree. The GT1B sounds better for bass right now. The GT1000 definitely has a lot of other pro features though..and those do matter...if I can dial in the GT1000 "close enough" I would probably stick with it for those things..but at the moment...I have to say...GT1B is better for bass then GT1000. (now ducking for cover).

If it’s not for you, then there must be a truth in that. Nobody’s going to try and convince you otherwise.

Thanks for that bro, appreciate it. It's looking like I'm getting a bit of a tax refund this year, and I'm going to put a few bits and bobs on trade me to get some funds together for one of these puppies. I see you are in Welly, let me know next time you're playing and I'll come around

Did you check the Hotone Ampero Press ? It's volume/expression combi, medium sized. The Dunlop DVP4 mini is smaller but you feel like a giant if you use that one

That could work!

It boggles the mind why the GT1000 has only 3 bass amp models, especially since they have more models in their library. If I wanted a bass amp modeller I most certainly would not have bought the GT1000 ! I wonder if you had been looking at the Line6 Stomp when looking to replace your GT1B and why you didn't go with that ?

I have looked at the Line6 Helix stuff for guitar and I don't like the way it sounds and feels...totally sterile to me. I almost bought one for guitar years ago and pulled out because of that. I still don't. Its yet to be seen whether I will like the GT1000 for guitar, I haven't tried that out yet, which I will definitely do before deciding to get rid of it or not. For guitar I'd actually rather have the bigger GT1000 with the pedal. Helix has more amp models for bass for sure...lots of people seem to like it, but you know on the internet there are people from every side on every piece of music hardware and software ever made...you can't trust a damn word from anyone unless you try it yourself.

But I heard people on this forum say they think the GT1000 sounds so much better then the GT1B, for bass; and I'm not personally seeing it. I think the GT1B sounds great and has more bass models, and bass pickup emulation and limiters. To me its no contest..if you really need the pro features of the GT1000 or perhaps if you play guitar as much as bass, then ok..I can see it. But for just bass.....I don't see the point of going past the GT1B right now. It sounds better, for 1/3 the price. Even without the IR loader, which is definitely something not to overlook, but IR searching can be a rabbit hole.

Now that being said, the GT1000 has the ability to combine a DI sound with an AMP sound, layered....and that is flexibility which should probably not to be overlooked for sure...and GT1000 has far more general flexibility. Biamp stuff, etc. Ok, But I find myself generally not needing that. I just like to use an AMP sound...a little compression..maybe a little EQ sometimes, but that can be a rabbit hole on its own. One of the beautiful things about having half a dozen amp models is that they all kind of just sound "right" for what they are. They don't need much EQ tweaking. I'd rather use EQ surgically and sparingly to remove a "problem" then to try to recreate the "sound" of some amp that the GT1000 doesn't have.

If you use multiple amp models, does that not introduce EQ problems for the FOH sound engineer ?

I’ve got patches with all the core aird preamps and Preamps in the fx loops, they’re all set up to be a consistent level. I guess as long as you’re sound-checking them etc it’s no more a problem than having any other effects which aren’t always on.

Yes, if you have a soundcheck you could test and correct for room dependent EQ problems.

I suppose one would use different amp models because of their different EQ profiles so one of them could have an EQ 'spike' that's not agreeable with the room. If you have only 'line check' you (well, the sound engineer) could be in for a surprise ?

Maybe I am overthinking this, maybe the EQ profiles are not different enough to cause such problems. But I do not know because I only use one pre amp, that is why I am asking @Dewdman42 as he seems to have experience with this !:)

Edit: I use @Dewdman42 because I think that way Dewdman42 gets an alert without the need to qoute him, but I am not sure..

Well that is an interesting question that would apply to ANYONE using any kind of amp modeler for both guitar and bass. Modelers provide a wide range of sonic possibilities, changeable at the click of a switch. Its not as if different amp models are any more dramatic in this effect then one patch having a mismatched level from another patch, or one patch having a crazy Octover pedal on it, while another does not, or one patch has some other FX or signal chain that creates inconsistent EQ's and levels, or dramatic bumps in the low mids you may have programmed into your patches...with or without different amp models.

A synth/keyboard player also deals with a wide palette of sounds and dynamics.

A good FOH will have things in place to prevent any issue. That probably means some kind of HPF at the board for one thing and a limiter. A smart FOH will not try to bump some low mids or anything when the bass player is a using a modeler.

so no, I don't think an amp modeler with a few different amp models should pose any problem whatsoever to FOH, anymore then numerous other programming mistakes a person could make while setting up their patches into a setlist. If you create a poor set of patches with poorly matched levels and some extreme bumps in frequencies inconsistently that would interfere with the drummer's range...then someone might get mad at you..but that's on you, and probably has nothing to do with being different models.

Plus.. who says you need to use different amp models in one gig? It is also not unreasonable to stick to one amp model and one basic bass sound for an entire gig...lots of scenarios where that is true, and that type of user doesn't even need a modeler, they should probably be using a preamp or amp head instead IMHO.

Well I’m back to re thinking about a manageable 4cm cable solution. Pricing up the cable to make my own is looking like it’ll be about £80+.

It got me thinking though, I have a couple of 5m xlr cables. Could I just get some xlr to dual 1/4” adapters for them and use that? Is there something I’m overlooking?
