Hey friends. I'm selling a bunch of my pedals and making the jump to one of these types of boxes. So the question is: Boss GT-1000 Core or HX Stomp? Opinions welcome!

To add to all the replies above: I've had both and currently have the Core and a Helix LT.

The Core is MUCH more powerful than the Stomp, I found it very easy to run out of DSP on the Stomp and it's probably even easier now with the recently added higher end effects. The Core is more like the Helix Floor/LT in DSP power.

I find that overall the Core sounds better and less artificial than the Helix, although this is purely objective.

There's a lot to like about the Helix family that I wish Boss would adopt, in particular I find the Line6 desktop editor to be much more user friendly than Boss's offering such as the simple fact that Line6 offers multiple levels of Undo! The Helix editor also has a lot more free slots to play around with.

The reason I keep the Helix LT around is that Line6 is MUCH more active in releasing new effects and updates than Boss (This is not even close!) and Line6 people are active in these forums and directly respond to their users. Another reason is that the real-world modeled effects in the Helix have a certain fun factor that is missing from the Boss offering.

It's not all roses in Helix land though, you have the very real running out of DSP issue and Line6's rather poorly planned default settings for many effects means that browsing different Amp or Drive models can be like walking on a minefield - You never know when changing a block will blast you with levels that are as much as 15dB higher than the previous preset. On top of that sometimes having dozens and dozens of Amps means that end up not giving a crap about 95% of them. More is sometimes just more.

That all being said, I use the Core much more than the Helix, for the all important reason that I like the end result much better with the Core.

What I do is save one of the provided bass patches to a user location. Then I modify it until it sounds great with the bass I am playing at the time. Then I save it with the name of the bass. From there I further tweak it for different genres/songs and name the patch accordingly. ie; Ric4003TML(Turn me loose tone from Loverboy). It turns out that Other basses sound great with the same patches so I just save them to another location and rename them. ie; Sadowsky.

This keeps me pretty busy so I don't get as much time as I'd like to play with all the other features. But that's good because I am jamming with a huge grin at how great it sounds. I really love the Core!

I love the core, the thing that sold me was the functionality that makes it an ideal centrepiece of a pedalboard. 2 fx loops, amp control and loads of signal routing options.

I never expected to like the preamps on the core but I was pretty blown away. Not quite ready to say goodbye to my bass head just yet but I came very close!

If Boss could just get better at dishing out updates and new features I think it’d be amazing. Tone Exchange is great but late and it’s super basic, I could’ve built it in a couple of days. Hopefully it’s just the start though!

I think I can get away with this board for everything I need.

Love the super 800+ preamp but I can get so close with my bass head that it feels a little redundant. Think I’ll try and replace with something like the Hampstead Subspace drive perhaps and maybe a tiny expression pedal.

Replaced the rear feet with some extending legs that I actually got for my keyboard but they’re super sturdy. Gives a little extra hight to fit a power supply under. I was thinking of drilling in some sockets for a little patch bay so I can really quickly connect it for 4cm but that’s probably super overkill

Interesting ! Added to my (long) list of things to try

Anywhere from 60-90 depending on which comp I'm running before the CORE. Some of them drive the drive a little more or less.

Edit: How much 'drive' do you use on that 'Clean' drive ?

Most have mentioned the main reasons, but I'll jump in on why I moved from the stomp to the CORE as well:
  • CORE to me feels more like a pro-level device
  • Amp models, though fewer in number, feel and sound more like amps
  • 2 FX loops
  • Less glitchy than the stomp (in my experience)

The Stomp also has 2 FX loops :) (okay, you need an adapter cord for the sends, not cool)

Maybe not really important but : I think the CORE also looks more like a pro-level device. I know lots of people think the CORE screen looks dated, to me it looks no-nonsense/timeless. When I look at the Stomp screen it always makes me think of a budget smartphone from a decade ago...:D. The CORE UI is not very good I think, but that has nothing to do with the screen IMO.

Just ordered some keyboard feet, I would have never thought of that on my own. Thanks for the tip!

Time will tell if it was a good idea or not I’ve done some heavy stomping and they feel really sturdy. Think they’re actually designed to stick on the bottom of your laptop to angle it.

I’ve also got an end pin jack socket like you’d typically use on an acoustic, going to drill a hole through the side of the pedalboard and mount the jack socket there and that’ll be my instrument input. A little neater

Do you have a link to these extending legs?
