When I had a Boss HM-2 in a send/return I was sending 70 and returning 60 IIRC. Imagine it goes up to 200... Well, better too much than too little! Also nice there is an input and output metering so you don't have to rely on your ears only!

For people using external pedals, particularly preamps and drives, what settings do you use for the send/return? Do you use the default 100 level or do you lower it? I tend to find the level is waaaay to hot.

I usually have send 100, and return around 50. This gets ample volume to drive or feed the tubes without blasting out the end of chain.

Your results may vary.

I am starting a new band, something punk-rock. I am using the X-BASS distortion into my SansAmp ParaDriver (after the Core). The same configuration as in my sludge/doom band only set the drive to 15 instead of 25 and somewhat more highs on the PDDI. X-BASS = nice!

Don't say that!
I am done with my HM-2, no more experiments.

Or maybe...

I’m just using the one on the core, I don’t have a real HM-2 although I’d snap a real one up for aesthetics alone

This is my board for the foreseeable I think! Super portable and very flexible. Would love a slightly bigger board with a DI, expression and maybe a Subspace drive or something but finances don’t cater for that right now!

I base everything off the Input Level when all effects are turned off. The Input Level is -10db. So at all gain stages, Input > Preamp > Compressor > Master Patch Level, the volume is -10db. Then I use the Output Level knob for monitor volume. I got the measurements using my DAW. I use my ears as well.

How high do you set your master volume knob?
Any tips for gain staging?

My master volume knob is at about 9 o'clock. This is only slightly louder compared to my bass going direct (into amp/aux/soundcard whatever). All my FX blocks are as loud as when a FX block is disengaged, exept for the EQ block I use to make my clean sound. I make that less loud because I want it to be quieter vs. my default sound which has plenty distortion on it.

Sometimes I crank the master volume knob to have a louder monitor (instead of turning up the monitor itself). My DI sound comes from the SUB-out which is unaffected by the master volume knob, no surprises for FOH!

Edit: using ears only.
