My Boss Core is getting a little nervous hehehe!

Just added an updated version of a multiband template I did last time I had a core. Same idea but tweaked some of the LPF and HPF frequencies for a flatter result. It’s not perfect but better!

BOSS TONE EXCHANGE
Man…. I thought the post was going to be about boss releasing an update to the core… shucks.

What are people using for drives on the Core? Is the x bass drive still a favourite or any good drive combos?

Prefer the guitar distortions for heavier genres where you want some tight dirt in the mids, I find the bass distortions are voiced a bit too dark. A-DIST and X-DIST are both great with a 200Hz HPF in front (use another HPF + LPF after the dirt, might need a dip around 800Hz too), and being MDP effects, they sound quite right in the highs without having to split the signal three ways. Don't need a lot of drive, just enough where they begin to saturate, around 20-30 or so. This is on GX-100, but live tone looks like this.

Been liking the BOSS (CS-3) style comp in a parallel setup to squash the clean side, with some direct signal mixed in, adds some punch without coloring the signal much. It's even better on the GTK CORE where you have a ratio control for the BOSS comp (which unfortunately isn't the case with GX-100). The original pedal is not universally liked, but I find the digital version with the added versatility of blend and ratio controls an entirely different animal.

PS does anyone have any tips on achieving a nice crossover with the LPF and HPF? So far I found setting something like LPF to 160hz, HPF to 250hz and then use an EQ at 200hz and boost/cut by ear but it’s far from scientific!

Yeah, I also go by ear, often end up boosting 200Hz a bit on the clean side if I have a filter there.

That’s super useful! I really like the X-OD guitar drive, will have to try the A and X-DIST ones again though and play with EQ.

For me the music we play isn’t super heavy but more clanky noisy rock, the bass focused drives being too dark for it. Favours more mids for sure.

Need to upload the latest version from my Core as I tweaked it from the one on Tone Exchange but this is using X-OD but with a frequency split and Bass DI for sun 200hz I think. This is still too dark for my taste but closer than I got with the X bass drive.

I’m also really liking the Boss comp, still not enough to take the Lusithand Alma comp off the board yet but warming to it.

Really enjoying playing with it, getting much better sounds out of it this time around. I think having played with a lot of dedicated drive pedals since has helped get a better idea of what I want to achieve. Just need to dive into the modulation and time based stuff now!

I am desperately trying to import your template but I can't figure out how to do it.
The knowledge base doesn't seem to provide an answer to my quest either.

If you download it from the Tone Exchange site and then open Tone Studio, under the library tab there should be buttons to import/export libraries. I don’t have it to hand to take screenshots I’m afraid! It’s horrible UI!

Well I’ve had a week or so back with the Core and glad to say I’m still impressed, probably more so than last time I used it.

I’ve had much more luck in dialling in good driven tones, they still don’t capture some of the magic of my EAE pedals but certainly enough for live use. I’d still want to hang on to my pedals for recording etc.

Still on the fence between which sounds best between this and the Mod Dwarf. I think the Dwarf has the upper hand especially for creating something really unique but in the Core’s connectivity and ability to integrate into my pedalboard makes it the winner for me.

Build quality is still great and while it gets a lot of hate it’s way more intuitive and quick to make changes on the fly than other devices I’ve tried.

There are some disappointing things though still:
  • No bitcrusher
  • Octaver tracks poorly compared to the OC5
  • The internal pedal stuff in assigns is a great idea that could’ve been improved by adding random value generators etc.
  • No IRs without an actively AIRD preamp in the chain is still annoying.
  • No knob assign for input presets.
  • Still very hard to understand what’s actually happening to the signal in terms of “stereo”. That’s possibly just my lack of knowledge though.
  • All of the Boss supporting software and Tone Exchange etc is extremely low quality and low effort from their side.
Most of those are just small annoyances which ultimately isn’t really a dealbreaker but definitely room for improvement in the next software update (lol).

There’s a little bit of me that is jealous of the HX Stomp users and the Noble preamp model in the last update but then I remind myself I’d still probably just use my Capo instead if I had one. Grass is always greener and I know I’d immediately miss all the routing options along with the Boss MDP fx which are all prettier fantastic.

I’m particularly liking the Maximum (I think it’s called) for guitar which is apparently roughly based on a heavily cranked Marshall. Sounds incredible, much better than the JCM120 model IMO.
