Boss GT-10B

So...I was a staunch individual stompbox user for a long time and got tired of doing the tapdance routine, especially when singing. I did a little reading on it and was fortunate to stumble upon a Boss GT-10B with the robust Boss gigbag on my local CL which I scored for a song. After using this unit for the past few days I can honestly say that I'm amazed. Insane amounts of tonal options which are extremely easy to tweak. Some may say that this unit is complicated but I'd have to disagree. I found it quite easy to navigate and intuitive. I might ever go back to individual stomp boxes ever again. Yes, it's that good.

I really enjoy hearing the character of my basses so I usually opt for the "super flat" preamp and just add the natural comp. This still allows my Aguilar TH500 work some magic if I plug straight in. It still sounds great when just plugging into the effects return, but has less volume when running through the amp's preamp section.

nice setup! :smug:

There are much smarter and more experienced people here then me I just got my first bass FX..... The Boss GT-10B and I'm looking to create a patch with a certain kind of fretless bass sound. The bass sound is from the Dave Matthews band on the track Two Steps live in Central Park, I will post an audio file so you can hear the bass.

Does anyone know what settings I would use to create a patch with this kind of sound ? Or even has a patch with the similar tune I could tweet. (I have been using GT-10BFxFloorBoard software)

Here's a link to the MP3

Just discovered this seemingly amazing device which is the the same layout and design as what my guitar player uses. I had no idea they made one for bass and I've been drooling over his for 8 months.

I have been using the Zoom B3 and although a lot of it sounds good I'd really like to have the expression pedal and be able to control volume with my foot. One thing I liked on the Zoom B3 is the "160 compressor" and the "Std Synth" patch which gives me a Tom Sawyer-like synth sound. Can I get both of those on the GT-10B? How is the compressor? Thanks!

Hi Bobicidal, I was never very happy with the compressor, but that's because I am using the Empress Compressor which I think is awesome. I have been experimenting with the synth ever since the GT 10B came out, and I think I have a fair Tom Sawyer patch, send me a pm and I will explain it to you how to do it (I suppose you'll want my other Moog Taurus patches as well?)

I don't own this unit anymore, but I did upload a ton of patches and sound clips to share including a lot of synth tones: http://cgraham.com/chris/music/bass/gt-10b/

According to the notes on the page most of them use a BOSS OC-2 in the FX loop. If you don't have a separate octave pedal to stick in the loop you may be able to insert the built-in octaver in the fx chain, assuming a block is available to do so.

Any chance you can just post them here?

Also, I think this thread is over the max number of posts. There is a Part 2 floating around, but I'm too lazy to dig it up right now.

Made a separate thread, too. But figured I'd ask where the people are. To wit, if I may:

"Greetings! My GT-10B has an issue with the loop feature...specifically, if more than 2 or 3 layers are added, anything played over the top causes the overall volume to drop off to nothing, especially with louder or more accentuated attacks. This has occurred with multiple amp combinations, after turning down the overall output volume, after turning down individual patch volumes, etcetcetc. Considering a TC electronics Ditto to do all of the looping. Thoughts? Experiences? Thanks and take care!"

So I'm not using this much anymore except for the Rush sounds, which are not great. I've tweaked a few, barely from what I was factory patches.

The comp/limit is OK but I've not compared it to quality gear. I might get a Diamon or MXR when one pops up. Gotta love TB Classifieds. More fun than going to the store or shopping online.

Latest pain point is the distortion. I can't find a tone I like.

Also I wish the device had an overall "blend" feature. For example when I us the OD and turn the effects level all the way down on that patch it doesn't give me the unaltered tone it seems to just chop off the highs. Weird.

Anyone with any ideas? I am running this using the four cable method in the effects loop of a Aguilar TH500 and I have the patch set with Send/Receive "on".

Thanks

It's difficult to tell without a full rig, ive just got a practice amp, but there's definite difference DI'd (or headphoned) to what you get out of speakers. Since I've got a fairly sharp bass (g&L sb2) OD works fine as a bass boost/grunt effect, but it really comes down to how you EQ it. The speaker/compression has a heavy influence on those effects down the chain, you might want to play with your chain a bit. I tend to go for 1 or 2 effects per patch and minimise unwanted effects on eq. Always keep a clean patch for comparison.

As for blend, that is annoying, it means having to fix for each patch. I find overall it works better with a passive bass since i started using the sb2. My Washburn 5er is more of a specific tone that gets really confused by the box if i over-effect with it. The sb2 can modify the eq a bit on both pickups - often effects like chorus and distortion hit the compression limits too hard.

Thank you. It sounds AWESOME.

Hey man! I see you sold your unit a while ago. May I ask what were your reasons of selling it? I'm looking for a genuine critic of the unit to be exact. Most people keep saying it didn't suit their exact needs, but I didn't hear a lot of people actually pointing out where the unit falls short. Any input from you will be appreciated.

Also, I heard someone saying that the unit "kills" or "sucks out" your tone, even when bypassed. He attributed this to it being a digital unit. This sounds a little bit far fetched, but what would be your opinion on this, guys?
