Boss Katana Bass ...

Its a brand new USB cable that I ordered through Amazon and paid the extra $10 to have it overnighted to me...

This one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NH11KIK

That USB cable doesn't have an RF choke. The one that comes with the Roland looks like this:
https://a.co/d/8YaiZx5

It can make a difference, and some Amazon Basics stuff is just garbage.

The wizzing by the fans if you stand right by them is normal - pickups are inductors and fans are electro-magnetic... Same idea as the drill to the pickup trick...lol

Maybe the GT-1B has a broken internal ground? What patch are you running on the GT-1B?

I'll try one with those chokes then... it'll probably have to be tomorrow, as I'll have to run out to my local Microcenter to get one... Only reason I ordered that one from Amazon was because I didn't WANT to drive allll the way out to the Microcenter yesterday, and Amazon offered overnight shipping on the one I ordered... yea I was just being lazy.... also the wife just got home from work and brought dinner, so I turned it all off for now... lol

As for the Patch? I'm not sure... how would I find that out?

Yea, I know the wizzing with my pickups by my fans is normal... I figured a guy with Bill Murray as his forum Avatar, ought to know I was just being goofy with that part of my comment :D

Regarding the patch, which preset did you use? Or what setting did you start with before you started tweaking? Just wondering if perhaps you dialed in one of the high-gain amp models...those like to impersonate noisy amps...

I'm presuming that.... if you're familiar with the Tone Studio software, the Preset is on the lefty hand side?

Of those, I don't remember which one it was set too when I acquired the unit... but I think it was R&B Synth, but to be honest the guy at the music shop plugged it in and set it for me to use while I picked out which of their Basses I was going to try with it first.

But when I went through the list, I tried Garage Rock, Modern Drive, 8x10 Stack, Phaser&Flanger, R&B Synth and Dreamy

They all sounded pretty good in the store... and of course I went through them all again after I got home, and plugged it into the PC... as well as a few others.

Yes, some of them were a bit high gain, and some where a bit more boomy then I liked...

Regarding those cord chokes, looking up usb cables on Microcenters website, neither og my local stores has any cords with chokes.... BUT.. I did find that amazon sells various sets of "snap on" ferrite chokes that I can order and have delivered by tomorrow morning.

USB ground loop noise !!
try
1. the GT-1B without an AC adapter (run on batteries)
2. if using a bass amp, unplug from the amp and try headphones (bass amp ground and USB/computer ground causing a loop)

The best option is to get a special isolated USB cable.

Also a 3rd party GT-1B editor software here, lets you load in patches from other Boss devices (GT-10B, GT-6B, GT-100, GT-1)

Try scrolling to patch P42. How noisy is that patch? How about P03? Noisy?

Yup, still noisy.

I've also discovered it makes a quick buzzing sound on top of the current one, every time my CPU is busy or I click to launch a seperate program... probably because doing so makes the CPU fan spin up a little faster for a brief second.

I ordered a set of ferrite chokes off Amazon, that can be "snapped" onto any cord... they should arrive later this afternoon... and even if they don't work, don't resolve it... well, I have other things I could use them for.

Unplugging the AC Power and running it straight off the batteries, does not make it go away....

I also discovered that even when the GT-1B is powered off, but the USB Cable remains plugged into both it and the PC... the noise continues; until I either unplug the USB cable, or power off the Amp.

However, and more so interestingly... your suggestion of just using headphones straight from the GT-1B and eliminating the Amp from the equation... It seems this DOES work! There's no background noise that I can hear, regardless of whether the USB cable is plugged in or not!

Do you live in an old "century" house? Or possibly be in a house where the neutral isn't really neutral on the panel, or some weird grounding kludge in the house?
That buzz coming on and off probably isn't fan noise, but it could be noise from the power buss through the USB cable, through the GT-1b, to the amp.

Have you got a plug-in wall-outlet tester that tests for a useful ground?

Ferrite chokes are a good call.

I used to have that problem in a house I rented that was super old. It didn't even have three-prong outlets - had to use adapters. Which does make me wonder if it's related to grounding.

At this house, I found out that plugging my equipment into outlets connected to different breakers seemed to help. Probably impractical to test, but I wonder if the static would still happen if you tried plugging the amp into a outlet in a different room from the computer?

Nope, not a house.
Just a typical Apartment.
I'm not sure how the panel is set up, I don't have access to it...
Only the apartment maintenance people can open it.
No we don't have a wall outlet tester... for that matter, the PC and the Amp, are plugged into seperate outlets on seperate walls; and all the outlets are 3 pronged ones.
The noise, is definetely coming from the fans on the PC, because the noise changes based on the fan rpms.

Well turns out, the chokes... didn't do a thing to resolve it..

I've also discovered that the buzzing becomes super loud, when I load up a demanding Game on my PC (Starfield, Farcry6, Assassins Creed Valhalla, etc) and leave it running in the background; and becomes even louder when my GPU fans kick in and spin up.... like I had previously stated it changed pitch when I ran a demanding program like 3DMark...

I tried an experiment, and rebooted my PC while the sound was happening... the sound stopped, as the PC went through its boot-up process. The sound started, as soon as Windows 11 finished loading on my screen... but this time it was a different sound, higher in pitch.

Then, with the GT-1B just running off batteries, I managed to drag it over towards my Wife's PC, which is a completely different build, different case, different fans... and plugged the USB into it. The noise started up, but again at a different pitch.

I do not know whether its actually the GT1B that's causing it, or if its an issue with the Amp itself.

The Amp was originally bought Used, and the buzzing does not happen when I use headphones with the GT1B, but does happen when the GT1B is powered off with the USB still plugged into it and the PC... the only way I can test whether or not its coming from the GT1B, is to return it to the store and ask if they'll exchange it for the other model they have there, presuming it hasn't sold... except that other model looks like crap; scuff marks all over it, its filthy dirty and its missing the cover to its battery housing... and I'm concerned that it might actually sound worse.

I don't know enough to point at the exact issue, but I can almost guarantee that you'd have the same problem with another GT-1B. Especially given 1) It sounded fine in the store, and 2) it sounds fine with battery power Edit: misread. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I will chime in.

Why do you play when it's hooked up to your computer anyway? Are you able to save the settings to the pedal and disconnect it from your PC? Is it acting as an audio interface?

You know, you wouldn't have had this problem with the Katana 110 I helped convince you not to buy :D (as long as you bought the bt dual and didn't connect it to your PC)

Except, in the Store...
I didn't have anything to plug into it via USB.
So I was never able to test its USB connection there.

Technically you're right, I don't need too... but I like tweaking the settings and experimenting with the different sounds and tones. So leaving it plugged in just makes that easier, as opposed to.. dial something in, sit and play a few riffs... decide I want to tweak a setting this way, or that way.. play a few more riffs... tweak it some more, etc etc...

I am going to call up a friend, see if I can temporarily borrow their laptop PC... take that, and the GT1B back to the store, plug it all up and see if I can reproduce the feedback noise.

Do we have any Katana Go users in here? I didn't see a thread specifically for it in this amps and cabs forum, and so I'll try my luck here (below is cross-posted from the effects forum, which has a Katana Go specific thread):

I just received mine last night and initial impressions are pretty good. This is definitely an amazing tool for practice.

Has anyone noticed some weird dissonant sounds with a lot of the presets when playing low notes on the 4 string? For example, if I play the main riff from "Chameleon" by Herbie Hancock, every time I start the chromatic run from G to Bb, the Ab sounds really dissonant. This effect is particularly pronounced with the Rock preset (which is otherwise pretty good and suitable for other genres like reggae as well). The Vintage preset seems to be the most usable out of the box with the least amount of dissonant weirdness. Anyway, I will definitely play around with mine more over time, but I am wondering for now if anyone else has noticed this?

This Blue Tooth for this Amp... do you have a link to it?
It occurred to me, that my PC... while it is a Desktop... its got Blue Tooth... though currently disabled in the BIOS.
But, does that actually work?
I could program a Katana via Blue Tooth from my Desktop PC?

Here it is on Amazon:
https://a.co/d/hk9Dkzc (I really don't remember it being that expensive - kinda wild)

It should work with your PC if it actually has a Bluetooth antenna on it (which is usually a part of WiFi cards in PCs iirc). I assume you'll have to enable it in the BIOS settings first? I always just use my phone or tablet and the Katana Bass App because it's more handy.

Yes, its got a Blue Tooth chip on the motherboard... its currently disabled in the BIOS but I know how to enable it.

I started getting curious about it, because everything I've read about it thus far only seems to imply that it works with Blue Tooth enabled Android or iOS devices, and I started think... well, gee, what about a Blue Tooth enabled Windows 11 Desktop??

So I was hoping for an answer on that.

You're probably right that a phone could be easier, but since my Amp literally sits right next to me and my PC... and I can just sit in my desk chair and jam... and run an audio cable from the PC's audio out, to the Line/Aux-In on the amp and get music added into the mix.. then having the Boss Tone Studio Software on the PC, works better for me

Also, the Amp sounded really amazing when I tried it in the store last week! :D

I think $60 is what I paid for mine. They come up in the classifieds every now and then.
