I tried that and came to the same conclusion. The pad doesn't clean up the headroom, it just makes the overdriven sound -10 dB quieter. I'm moving on from this, I hope you find a suitable solution that works for you.

I tried that and came to the same conclusion. The pad doesn't clean up the headroom, it just makes the overdriven sound -10 dB quieter. I'm moving on from this, I hope you find a suitable solution that works for you.
I am returning my combo today with Thomann, I will give it one more try with an exchange (hoping they have stock still), but unfortunately if this issue persist on another unit, I will seek a refund.
Steelbed 45 and heartfrequency I am so sorry to hear that you are having problems like that because right now I am really enjoying my Katana 210 combo because it sounds great and im going to have another practice with it this afternoon.I will post how it goes but you have heard the demos of the amps where they sound good and dont have the issues you are having.Again sorry to hear about those problems.
I had a practice this afternoon with the same loud drummer and guitar player with an older 30 watt Marshall tube combo and my Katana 210 had no problem at all keeping up with volume to spare.From my experience so far I think this amp should have no problem hanging with the other 350 to 500 watt 210 class d combos on the market with its 160 ab watts.There is a 15 minute video by the GuitarGeek on youtube that was put up today where he demos the amp and talks about the bass response it has and how loud it is.For the few people having problems with their amps thats too bad because when this amp is working right and dialed in it sounds great.
Aside from the fact that the Guitar Geek has no idea what he’s doing on a bass amp, fairly informative video. It does make me want to try one.
Just watched the Anderton’s comparison of the Boss 110 and the Fender 100 watt Rumble. I’m starting to want one!
Believe me that 160 class ab watts in that amp sound as loud as the 350 to 500 watt class d combos I have heard but you be the judge of that and go to your nearest dealer that has them and try one.Watch the Andertons video of the Fender Rumble 100 vs the Boss Katana 110 to kind of put that into perspective.

These remind me of the old Roland DB-500 that was my workhorse for over 10 years until it took a dump. It was 160 watts with a 12" speaker. They also have the same graphical font as the Rolands. I now use the 12" cab on its own after removing the head. I still occasionally use that cab and it's the only 12" I have. Fun Fact - I was always asked to TURN DOWN when using that amp. 160 BOSS watts is plenty. Probably the only combo in which I'm interested at this point and if I needed a combo (I don't) I would jump on the 2x10. What a great time for gear!

By comparison, I run an SWR 350 into an 8ohm Goliath Jr. 210, so I'm pushing about 175 watts (?), and I am plenty loud enough for any gig I do. My hesitation is that I already have a Boss GT1000 CORE, as the center of my tone shaping. Do I really need the Katana?
As bass players we always buy stuff we dont need.Whats stopping you now lol.The Katana would probably simplify your setup some.Everything in 1 combo.
From looking at the examples it looks like these amps get "loud" the same way the old COSM system "makes loud," with a combination of low-band compression and wide-band limiter. The louder you go, the more the real deep bottom end drops out. For most it will be totally fine.
I should have probably done my homework, I didn't realise they were class AB. Thanks for the heads up!
Thats what attracted me to them in the 1st place was Boss saying they had a class ab power amp.In the class d bass amps ive heard so far it just seemed to me that last little bit of bottom end punch was missing something this amp has is loudness and punch despite the rated power.But as ive said to everybody go try one before you think its not enough and let your own ears be the judge.
Where do they seem expensive as the Katana 210 is the same $ as the Fender Rumble 210 500 and the Katana has many features over the Rumble such as multiple types of compression,delay and other effects if you had to go out and buy would be a lot more expensive and well make up for the difference in weight.
I had a gig today for a fundraiser at a highschool and my Katana 210 worked just fine.Again with a loud drummer and the guitar player using a Boss Nextone Artist 80 watt 112 combo.I wasnt turned up that loud and had volume on tap to spare.Yes a 160 watts class ab is loud enough.

A little unfortunate update on my end, still encountered the same issue with the replacement amp I received from Thomann (unwanted overdrive when not dialling any effects or gain, etc - I tried several cables, 3 different basses active and passive, different electrical outlets and compared with my previous combo amp, a fender rumble 40 which doesn't present the same issue), I have filed for a refund and I will be sitting this one out.
In theory this amp is all I wanted it to be, but I will wait to see if these issues are really that widespread that I am having the same issue with two amps or if I am particularly unlucky. In any case, I wanted to say on a positive note that the amp seems incredibly good for the price with all its features (a bit on the heavy side coming from only class D amps).
I hope this doesn't discourage too many people from trying those out, but I would definitely recommend trying your model in store when possible, and with headphones particularly as this will highlight the potential issues directly.
