BOSS OC-2 synth mod with sound clips

Finally got some toggles on hand and installed them on my two OC-2. The Japanese box can support toggles installed near the power jack, the Taiwan box can support toggles on top near the OCT1/2 controls. Now you can select factory or squarewave sounds for each OCT1/2 individually for maximum sounds.

hi Gastric, how to separate the synth mod for oct1 and oct2 independently..?? by using 2 x spdt switch, or 2 x dpdt switch..?? i have the taiwan box..

you CAN use a DPDT switch but only wire one side of it making its a SPDT, or just get 2 SPDT (differences is about .10)

could you please post how to isolate the filter section, (apparently my goals is to have about 232 switches on the box...)
 
sillyfabe, yes I will be posting what I have gotten up to. There is a picture of the guts on the "show your pedals guts" page.

I just got the entire thing back in the box and found some interesting results. Engaging various filters at different times produce various levels of distortion, from mild to midrange to full on.

I will get some sound clips or a video up as soon as I can... but its 10:30pm already so no luck today. Will try to get something done on Saturday.

One more thing you may want to try that I didnt do is to alter the link between Oct1 and Oct2. Oct1 feeds into Oct2 which is how the second octive down is produced. But since Oct2 is not very usable maybe by giving it the direct signal you could produce a second Oct1 channel. One could then be used with the filters on and the second with the filters off. :hyper:

Ok. I want to do this. I'm quite ********. Before I do this, does that little toggle switch allow me to keep the normal unmodded OC2 sound, and then if I flip the switch I have access to the cool synthy modded sound? I only ask because I really like my OC2 as it is, but I also like this sound too. This will determine whether or not I need to buy another one.

Watch the YouTube vid of the guy detailing the mod. It has most of the answers you need. You solder directly to the lug of the resistor.

I only ask because I really like my OC2 as it is, but I also like this sound too. This will determine whether or not I need to buy another one.

That's the whole point of the switch, to toggle between factory sound and the direct square wave synth sound. The original video has a single DPDT switch that toggles both OCT1 and OCT2 simultaneously. I personally opted for individual SPST switches so I can toggle each independently which is better. That way you can mix-n-match and blend.

DazonBass took it a step further and has two toggles for each OCT1 and OCT2 so he now has 4 different tones for each OCT1 and OCT2. Factory (oscilator + ringmod + filter), oscilator+ ringmod, oscilator + filter, pure oscilator). We just need him to spill the beans on the exact wiring scheme and switches. I'm guessing two SPDT switches on each OCT1/2.

SWEEEEEEET. Ok, that's what I thought, but like I said, I'm pretty dumb. He definitely needs to spill the beans on that. THAT's the mod I think I'd like to get started on.
 
Allright time to revive this thread!
I thought I came up with a circuit, that would effectively gate both the "raw" squarewave, clean oct1 and clean - while still being small enough to fit inside the box.

Well I did... Kinda... I'll have to give up the battery compartment and then there is the problem, that it actually doesn't work that good :( It fizzes a bit too much (especially on the oct1). I hope it is something I can sort out (I have a few weak points in my design I'll be looking at first).
And in the end if it does not work, I have a plan B. Turns out there is a way to turn down the volume to the "tracking section" So you get the gating response of turning down your instrument volume, but with a use full clean blend.

Is there any interest in this?
 
Sure I'm interested. I have one. I notice that when it is bypassed, I get a fizz to each note. I originally thought I blew my tweeter but my back up cab did it too. I then thought it might have been my Phat Phuk B since it was mostly apparent/present when on. I then after cursing took my board apart and tried each pedal alone. Do you have that effect? The oddest thing is I can mostly eliminate the "fizz" when I turn the Oct 1 toggle to on (the synth mod square wave would sound) and turn the Oct 1 volume to 0 there is no fizz. With the volume still off but I switch the toggle to mod bypass it gets noisy again. Oct 2 vol and Oct 2 toggle both have no effect regardless of its positions.
 
The fizz you are having is probably the square-wave "bleeding" through. I don't have this problem when the pedal is bypassed, but when it's on in "stock mode" i can hear the square-wave faintly.
I'm not entirely sure about why, but have a good theory:
-The square-wave signal has a great amplitude and is changing with a very sharp "edge" (meaning high treble content).
-Wires close to each other work as a capacitor.
-Capacitors block DC but allows AC through to some degree.
What happens is that the signal "bleeds" either through the switch or perhaps the OCT1 square-wave wire is close to the output wire.
(It's kind of like biking, when a truck overtakes you - even though you don't touch the truck, you feel it.)

Solutions:
-Move the wires around, note that this could make it worse.
-Add some filtering to the square-wave might help (this is like slowing the truck down)
-Attenuating the square-wave might help (this is like making the truck smaller, but at high speed you'll feel it still.)
-Different approach to adding the square-wave: The ring modulator ("volume follower") can be modified in a different way so the square-wave gets mixed in, without feeding the Flip-flop output directly into the signal path.

Now for my progress with the gating circuit:
I solved some of the problems; it's quite stable now, but doesn't turn the volume all the way down when gating and still fizzes a bit. Both problems can be solved, but not with the limited space inside the OC-2. I do however like the that it gates the clean sound as well, might make it into a standalone stompbox at some point.

I'll try to make the fizz from the square-wave disappear on my OC-2 an post back, if i find a solution.:)
