Wow, not gonna lie I was interested for the synth capabilities, but seeing the amps and multi-fx options alongside I'm debating selling my HXFX for this. I think I need to dig through the manual and see about setting up parallel paths and drive options for the unit. If this can do what I use the HX for plus some basic synth features as well, I'll have a hard time talking myself out of it.

Inst blocks require the GK pickup. Normal is the 1/4 inch input. Was planning on it, but I may need a Godin A4. This device is perfectly designed to run two bass guitars. Synth and Analog.

So, is the dynamic synth a much improved version of the analog synth in the old V-Bass? Or is that the Analog GR? Nice to see two oscillators in the OSC synth (unlike one in the V-Bass).

Be interested to know if the OSC synth sounds a lot better than its predecessor in the V-Bass - which did not sound great.

My problem with these units is they operate as single oscillator synths which in the V-Bass and VB-99 sounded pretty thin compared to a real synth. I could deal with the latency but the thin sound and the annoying GK-3B (only place to mount it realistically on a Jazz Bass meant you had problems using a right angle 1/4” cable when not using the unit) is why I no longer have one.

I would love to proven wrong with the new unit.

Very much improved, if you look at the SY-300 and SY-1 bass demos using a mono bass input, and multiply that by 6 with a GK hex pickup.

It's a synth aimed at GK type pickup Users, perhaps the "SY" part could be misleading, it is basically the next evolution of the Roland VG99/VB99.
I think the 1/4" input can do limited amount of synth, but a GK input will give you synth per string, alternate tuning per string, and a few poly-effects, and the instrument modeling.
But it does not do PCM synth like the GR units do.

I agree about the sy naming point you made, I was hoping it would be a powerful sy300..... it might turn out to be a bit of a Frankenstein

My problem with all the SY-1/300 videos is that very few of them do not sound like a cheap toy when compared to a real synth. The Tone Report video is a really good exception. These units have a problem with producing a good analog pad (string or brass). It seems that good tracking units have poor sound and good sounding units have poor tracking. I have really wanted to like them, but just gave up on imitating a good synth sound in a pedal. Instead, I have migrated to pedals that mangle the bass sound in a synth way (TWA Great Divide, Korg G5, etc.). That said, the opening dynamic synth pad sound in the Boss video is really good and is making me want to hear more.

I just sold my Helix, and have ordered a SY-1000.
SY-1000 lets you run 4 parallel instruments (normal pickup + 3 models of bass's/guitars) each with its own separate preamp and cabinet settings and parallel chained effects all at the same time,
plus you get the great 32bit Boss 500 series effects found in the GT-1000.
You can have alternate tunings per string, different synths/models on different strings, poly Fx (effects per string).


This is way beyond a Helix.

Thank you for the detailed explanation of how you made your decision!
I wasn't sure about the depth of the effect section, but if they include some effects from the gt-1000, the quality is obviously there... In any case, if it's not enough, I can always get a Helix Stomp and run it through the loop! Overkill, I know!
