Boss SY-1000!

Well, I did get to play it *a little bit* at NAMM. They even had a bass set up for one of them!
The tracking is impressive. I never got to play a VB-99, but the synth sounds tracked much better than the Vbass. Of course, without the Tone Studio, I didn't get to look under the hood all that much. Just playing presets, the thing didn't choke, EVER, even when confronted with sloppy, NAMM-pressured playing.
*Salivating* Can't wait to get mine!!!

Do you use it with a 13pin pickup? I have an SY300, just not sure I will gain much if anything without using the 13pin.

I'm using the GK pickup. The normal pickup synth is good but I don't think enough of an upgrade over the SY300 to warrant the cost. Unless you also make use of the amp and effect modeling that is part of the SY1000 - that may be enough "extra" to justify upgrading.

What are your thoughts so far on the Bass mode side of things?
There is a lack of Bass Mode (meaningful) reviews and demos anywhere, how does it compare to the VB-99.

Still awaiting on one to arrive at the under side of the world, currently been using the GR-55 since 2011,
and also have a SY-300 which I have never bonded with (it has an annoying crossover distortion baked into the synth) which is now going up for sale.
AND I am hoping the SY-1000 bass amps are good, the GR-55 are not good, and had to modify my GR-55 to insert a Tech21 VtBass in the normal pickup loop.

I never liked the GR-55's bass modeling - I would run both VB99 and GR55 and just use the GR55 for the synths - usually strings/pads/organs although the latency limited the use. I also used the SY300 (which I sold once the SY1000 was announced) and was pretty happy with it.

My opinion is that the SY1000 is a definite upgrade to the VB99. I've only compared using headphones but the modeling is rather good - and the routing options are much improved.

Can't wait to receive mine and compare it to the VB99.

Does the SY1000 have Multi-band compressor and Poly ring generator in Bass mode ?
Haven't seen them in the editor....

I just brought a Roland Sonic Cell midi sound module (came with the SRX-01 dynamic drums and the SRX-06 Complete Orchestra expansion ROMS),

sonic_cell_front_main.jpg

which I might use with the SY-1000 (when the SY arrives :-/) for PCM synth type tones from the pitch to midi function.
It will provide the functions missing in the SY-1000 that the GR-55 has (PCM synth and *.wav file player),
actually it will do up to 16 assignable midi channels, with 4 parts per channel, being a total of 64 PCM synths at the same time,
and assignable to fret/note ranges per string.

I also saw yesterday, a modification someone did to their GR-55, with a GK 13 pin thru socket added, so you could run both the SY-1000 and a GR-55 from the same GK cable.

I got my SY-1000 yesterday. A quick run through bass presets. I am disappointed. The presets are nice but almost unusable. I love my GR-55 and will keep it. I may return this SY-1000. Don't buy SY-1000 if you can't live without PCM-synth like GR-55 has.

Anyone hook an external synth up to the SY-1000? How does it track and how bad is the latency? Does it track down to a low B?

I'm looking more for cool built in synth sounds and how well the MIDI out works (to drive say a Moog Minitaur) then emulating different basses & cabs...

thx for any insight!

From what I read , the SY1000 has comparable midi tracking as VG99/VB99/GR55.
Knowing that , my VB99 has 98ms latency with LowB pitch to midi : totally unusable.
Only thing that works is Pad stuff/chords on higher register.

The SY1000 "IS" a synth though , with very low latency , so program your synth sounds there.
Or buy an Industrial Radio MIDI bass , the only thing that exists that can trig Midi note with "liveable" latency.
(but mucho $$$$ )

Sadly , there is not much solution for us , bass players
