Boss SY-1000!

From what I read , the SY1000 has comparable midi tracking as VG99/VB99/GR55.
Knowing that , my VB99 has 98ms latency with LowB pitch to midi : totally unusable.
Only thing that works is Pad stuff/chords on higher register.

The SY1000 "IS" a synth though , with very low latency , so program your synth sounds there.
Or buy an Industrial Radio MIDI bass , the only thing that exists that can trig Midi note with "liveable" latency.
(but mucho $$$$ )

I'm hoping that the SY1000 has much better low end response then almost 100ms...

I've tried alot of different bass midi solutions - i had a peavey midibass for a while (broke), sometimes use MIDI2Bass on the Mac (works ok, only down to E, doesn't track any vibrato, and while the forum is active doesn't really look like they have released any new software in 3-4 years), and even a Sonicsmith convertor+ (didn't work, but probably due to the Moog Minitaur's horrible CV implementation).

Just pure physical limitations of the low note frequencies make the lower notes for Bass-to-midi with high latency times, using staring & pickup type techniques.
But the main function of the SY-1000 is HRM modeling which is virtually instantaneous, without the latency or glitching.

For latency free Bass to midi, you would need a system which knows the fret position and string being plucked, and bypassing analog string pitch to midi detection all together.
But would need an additional system to detect string note bends.

Now if I was a crazy nut inventor, I would make a system that used:
1> laser distance detection from the nut to the fretted note, which will give you the midi note played.
2> hex pickup only for string identification and note trigger/velocity from analog amplitude.
3> a string strain-gauge sensor in the bridge for each string to sense increased string tension when note bending, and maybe to compensate for auto-tuning.

Pitch to midi on Roland units only works with 13 pin

Peavy Midibass "IS" the ancestor of the Industrial Radio bass. ( Same guy , same technology but updated )

It's the only viable option so far but there is still some latency , and no low B .....

Roland GR55 PCM sounds have noticeable latency in the low end too .


That's the reason why I absolutely love my VB99 , (almost) no latency synyth. The "palette" is limited but what it does , it does very well.
Sy1000 will be the same. (HRM/COSM)
 
Hello all. I'm planning on getting sy 1000 in near future . A question to those who already have one. Can you set it up to go back and forth from 13 pin to 1/4 " accessibility or able to use both at same time?
 
Has anyone been able to compare latency of the dynamic synth to the oscillator synth? I know that the dynamic synth should be pretty much zero but I am wondering how much is present for the oscillator synth (which definitely had latency on the V-Bass and VB-99. Thanks.

I lowered the level of my Hexa pickups , it helped with tracking in general , my setup was maybe a little "hot".

The latency is only annoying on OSC only patches with fast attack.
Personaly , I won't build OSC only patches for groovy stuff.

The other synth are low latency.
There is 4 ( !!!!! ) different source you can mix , so you can build a very vast variety of different synth patches.
 
Well... finally my SY-1000 arrived yesterday !!
First impression into Bass mode and flicked through all the factory presets, I thought OMG !! have I wasted my money, this sounds just like my SY-300.
But then it wasn't until I started with blank init patches, and worked through the individual elements,
such as set up a good GK and Normal PU bass tone, then add an amp, selecting through the Bass amp options,
then did I start to appreciate the new updated modeling hardware.

The Amp models are a big improvement on the GR-55 or GT-10B, they are actually quite reactive to playing nuance
rather than the older equipment models where they just sounded like different EQ settings.

Now to try and re-create as many of my gigging patches from the GR-55,
I have previously used the GR-55 modified with a Send/Return loop drilled into the case,
in the normal pickup circuit where I used a Tech21 VtBass pedal for my Preamp tone.

I think the SY-1000 can replace at least the Vt-Bass pedal, I just need to re-assign some Preamp tone settings to the panel knobs.
 
Found my easy way to audition tones, using a D.A.W (Bandlab Cakewalk in my case), setup 7 audio tracks with the SY-1000 USB connected and selected as the audio device.
Set and record Arm your tracks like this for Input and Output:

track 1 = SY-1000 GK1/2 Left mono
track 2 = SY-1000 GK1/2 Right mono
track 3 = SY-1000 GK3/4 Left mono
track 4 = SY-1000 GK3/4 Right mono
track 5 = SY-1000 GK5/6 Left mono
track 6 = SY-1000 GK5/6 Right mono
track 7 = SY-1000 Main Out Stereo

Set a blank patch to record dry normal pickup at the Main Out (track 7)

Record a few tracks with slow and fast riffs.
In the SY-1000 System USB settings, set Audio Routing to "Resynth"

Now you can set your recorded GK audio tracks to playback looped repeated,
and you now have less time playing and more time tweaking.

You can now audition patches and adjust settings/parameters with both hands.

Sadly , OSC still sucks a bit ....... makes me appreciate more my VB99 !!!


That said , it's still a very good unit for everything else than OSC.

Still happy with it overall then? I never ended up using the OSC sounds on my V-Bass because they sounded so thin. I can handle some latency if the OSC sounded much better - would be used for pads mostly anyway.
 
Very happy , definitely a keeper (so is the VB99)

The OSC doesn't sound thin at all , it's very complex , and you can stack 3 of them.
The problem is the latency (faster/tight playing) and tracking.
I haven't use OSC in any patch I made so far.
I hope they'll work on that on a future FW update.....

One other VERY nice thing about the SY is that you can use the bass signal as the generator for synths.

I'm in a full time working band and was hoping this was an upgrade to the GR-55 but not even close, I found about 2 or 3 usable synth sounds.. The fact you can plug straight in without the GK3 pickup and play some synth tones is very nice and the tracking was great, problem is you only have about 5 patches you can use like that the rest you need to use the GK pickup, even with the pickup its 200 patches of the same few synth sounds.. Maybe if you're a guitar player and want to use this unit for guitar modeling and different tunings it might be worth it but as a guitar synth it is lacking big time.. I'll stick to the GR-55 until Roland (not boss) comes out with an upgrade..

The SY-1000 is not even closely related to the GR-55, a very different type of synth engine, more based on "analog style" subtractive synthesis,
where the GR-55 is based on PCM sample synthesis.
If they could have included the PCM synth like the GR-55 has, the SY-1000 would be an absolute killer.
Using a GK cable splitter and driving both the SY-1000 and GR-55 is AWESOME !!
But I am hoping for a GR-55 successor sometime soon, my GR-55 is worn out.
