I think my wife and I have been pretty lucky over the years. I got burglarized once before we met. The thieves took the stereo receiver I had and the turntable. With a record still on it. I got jumped once in the lobby of the building we lived in at the time, but that was it until much later. Her Honda Civic has been broken into a couple times and stolen once, and I have an enclosed cargo trailer that some junkies tore up a hasp on and broke into. The junkies got a motorcycle ramp. They might have got a dollar scrapping it, but I doubt they even got that much. It cost my a whole lot more to fix the damage they caused, but so far, that's it. I count that as being blessed after having been on the planet as long as we have.

Our home go thit early one evening while we were out. Nailed for about $2500 in misc stuff. Later the same guy tried B&E on lots of houses on the same street. Cops ran him down with a police dog that bit him in the ass and held on. Cops were tossing the dog over fences to chase that little bugger. Had county guys, the local force, plus Seattle, plus a chopper with a 'night sun' on it.

When they had the guy in the police car I went up to one of the local cops I knew and told him if he handed the guy over to me I would take him on a one way boat ride and sink him in the lake. And I meant it too. My wife was so freaked out by it all she almost would not even sleep in the house for a week. The rat had gone thru every drawer in the house, every closet, every place. Guy was out on personal recog and had a rap sheet a mile long. They later traced him (though unproven) to something like 300+ local burglaries.

The additional 60$ to get replacement value instead of "actual cash value" is so worth it. Turns out that the actual cash value isn't so much the actual value when you try to replace things. Where as a full check for the totaled msrp plus tax and damages can make you forget it ever happened

I am a former police officer and came home one day with my son who was 5 at the time only to find my front door unlocked.

I opened the door and instantly knew my house had been hit. My place was thrashed. Fromm my front door I was able to see one of the suspects jump over my back yard wall

I gently pushed my son away from the door, drew my weapon and slowly backed away from the door with my son in tow.

The nailed me for almost everything I had. including my CD collection of over 1000 cd's

Two weeks later I was working and heard a pursuit of a possible 459 suspect being broadcast in another division.

I learned later that it was one of the suspects that had hit my house.

I also learned that said suspect stated during an interview that he is always armed when he burglarizes houses and would not hesitate to shoot it out with a homeowner.

I used to drive a ragtop MGB. One night when I was parked behind a theatre I was working at, someone slashed my rear window to steal a flannel shirt that was visible behind the driver's seat. The shirt was maybe worth a quarter, I had to buy a new top for the car for ~$500, and if the idiot who did it had checked the doors he would have found the car unlocked.

Unfortunately, nowadays a lot of deadbolts have non-removeable interior keys in the lock. This is a safety measure in case of house fire. Many people have perished in house fires when they can't find the key for the interior dead latch. Our home has this kind of lock. The key on the interior side of the lock does not come out.
My father, an ex-officer, has always said that you should be as security conscious as possible, but nonetheless if someone really wants to break in to your home, they will.

Why don't all of you have alarm systems? The worst that will happen is a quick smash and grab, instead of a worthless pos going through your whole house one drawer at a time. I have sensors on every window and door, crash sensors in every room, and motion detectors throughout the house. Plus if someone tries to come in at night, I always set the alarm for zero delay, so I'll know before he/she gets through the threshold.
