Brian Bromberg Carvin Model Part 2

Not a humbucker ala' a MM style pick-up, just the neck pick-up that is in the actual neck position.
Like building the bass and forgetting to route the neck pick-up hole.
Then installing the humcancelling pick-up that is spec'd in the bass for the bridge position.

I thought Brian mentioned something about.just a humcancelling in the bridge position because that's the only pick up he uses mostly when playing fretless.

I did check out the carvin channel. Could find any fretless B2 videos.......

I have two fretless B2's, a 4 string and a 5 string. Both growl so much that when I take them off and put them back on the stand they are still going bwaaaaaaaah! Seriously they are killing. I have the humbuckers on them as I only use the bridge mag pick-up and don't want the buzz of the single coils even though I love the sound.

I played the 4 string at the Baked Potato a few weeks ago on a gig and I ended up playing it all night. I can't remember the last time I did a whole gig on fretless bass, it was awesome!. I got the hard as nails finish on the fingerboards as I like the growl and I want my boars to last with round wound strings.

Yeah no kidding! They told me that it actually is quite a time consuming process that's apparently not very pleasurable to do, but the end result is fantastic so they offer it. I think it takes several days to do it the way they do so that's why there is the extra expense. To me if you are looking for that sound and hardness (fingerboard protection) it's more then worth the extra cost. I love it on the fretless basses that I have that's for sure.......

I played the B25S at practice for my other (P&W) band today. Whereas during the blues band practice gave a nice smooth tone, during this session, when I dug in a bit, it barked out some nice attitude. With the Labella tapewounds, it's a really interesting, unique tone when you play aggressively.

For your amusement, Brian, this is one of your Dean B2 basses I owned awhile ago, defretted, and refinished with a funky paint job using Duplicolor Mirage purple/green and some kinda glitter in epoxied fretboard. :) Sold it to a TBer.

Brian, could you give me some input into the feel of the neck with satin compared to ring oil finish? The only basses I have ever owned have been gloss finish on the back. What do you prefer and why?
Anyone else out there have an opinion on this?

Personally I love the feel of sanded smooth bare wood, must come from playing my upright bass. But, the down side of bare wood on an electric bass neck is that the neck will absorb more weather and moisture elements when it is not sealed and most likely will be less stable then a sealed neck.

A good happy medium that I do is have a sealed neck, like the gloss finish on the body so it's totally sealed and protected from the elements, then use OOOO steel wool or fine finishing sand paper and sand it down so it is a more porous finish. It then feels more like sanded wood neck and not like a layer of plastic on the back of the neck, but it is still sealed to the elements.

If you are ordering a new bass from Carvin you can ask for their painted satin finish on the back of the neck so the color matches the body color but is not glossy. It is sanded so it feels mo better and closer to what I think you are looking for........

Sounds like a very cool retro looking bass. I love the vintage cream B24 that I posted pics of on the Carvin B2 Bass Facebook page!

5 piece maple neck or one piece maple neck? That is a very tough question as both are cool. I think it is all personal preference. Either way you can't go wrong. Please post pics of the bass when you get it! Thanks and I hope you like it........B2

Multilaminate necks although not necessarily stiffer are more resistant to warpage such as twisting. They're aesthetically pleasing but probably unnecessary, especially in a neck with carbon reinforcement. There will probably not be a noticeable impact on tone.

IMO personal preference, as Mr. Bromberg says.

Are the carvin necks carbon reinforced? I was just considering it if it provided extra stability if needed. I am going to have the back painted anways so it was not for looks.

...and that cream color is exactly what I was hoping for.
