Brice?

In it's current shape this bass is unplayable.

Kurt offered me immediately an exchange but I already gave it to one of my students as a gift, that how upset I was. His father is a tech and will try to make this bass playable.

I'm confused. Sounds like you got a bad product, but rather than exchange it, you gave it away to a student? In unplayable condition, eating the purchase price?

So you are out $300, your student has an unplayable instrument, your student's father has to spend his free time trying to salvage this 'gift', and Rondo get's it's reputation sullied on this board. Seems like no winners here.... :hmm:

No need to be confused here; my student is the winner, since his father doesn't mind investing his time to make this thing playable. By the way, the integrated preamp/eq is also screwed up due to faulty wiring. Says a lot about quality control.
I just didn't want to go into shipping it back and may be
receive another "dog". I should have done some more research, one of you TBers mentioned in a Brice thread that he went to the rondomusic store and saw several "flawed" basses. So, unless I have a friend visiting the store and trying out a bass for me, I'll stay away from Rondomusic's mail order. But that's just my opinion, end of story.

hey, just a question, but i've been wondering, is the action pretty low on the six string brice's? i haven't heard anything about them.....
The Action on any bass is adjustable by means of regular setup techniques. The Brice basses are no different. The action can be set high or low depending on your preference by someone who knows how. When I bought my Brice the action was pretty high, but I gave it a setup including tweaking the truss rod and adjusting the bridge saddles and intonation and now the action is pretty low.

I guess my surprise is that you chose to publicize the problem when you turned down an extremely fair offer to make things right. One of the reasons people choose to do business with Rondo has been their reputation for prompt returns if you're unhappy with the instrument. I would not be comfortable posting about a bad experience if I had turned down the offer to make amends. I think it strips the Vendor of any chance to defend themselves. I think this applies to any business.

I mean no offense. Peace.

I too just got a Brice 6 yesterday!A bitter sweet package at best.It came with a broken neck,or should I say delaminated head to neck joint. The strangest joint I have ever seen on any guitar. As someone stated in a previous post, the head stock had a much lighter finish than the body.It was almost white while the body was golden, very noticable. It looked pretty sharp all in all.I have no idea how it played or sounded due to the broken head stock to neck.Well any way I'm not slamming anyone, instument or store.Just stating the facts as I know them at this point.I did send it back for a replacement today.I'm hoping for the best!I hear Kurt is a straight up guy and the bass is likeable enough to give it another shot.I'll update later on the sound and playability if I get one that can be played.

No offense taken. But as you see (i.e. Gooseman) I'm not the only one here who is complaining about Rondomusic's severe lack of quality control, which has to be improved.
Everyone should be happy when someone is critical relating to mail orders.

At the end what I do with my instrument, i.e. give it away, burn it, hang it on the wall, paint it, etc., is after all my business (no offense).

It's not Rondo's lack of quality control. They get all the basses in big shipments from Brice and Essex and they don't go through and inspect every bass. When they get an order in for one they grab it and send it without opening it up and looking at it (hence this would take a while and they don't seem like the biggest operation and from the sound of it they are pretty busy most of the time).

Now let me get this straight, Rondo receives the merchandise packed from South Korea. They then just ship it out to the customer without opening the box to make certain that everything is alright?

So, what makes it then so certain that, if I return the faulty bass that I won't get another "dog"? If it is Rondomusic's business just to check the returned complaints it makes me wonder what kind of policy they have? In my experience it's a lot cheaper and more sufficient to check each and every item personall and make certain that everything is in order. Rondomusic would save a lot of money in shipping and gain more satisfied customers, that's what successful business is all about.
I did a lot of exporting in my life and personally made certain that the merchandise was 100% in order before I ship it out to the consumer. It's easy to get a bad reputation. South Korean manufacturers do pretty good jobs if you as an importer are "on your toes". Good examples are Conklin GT-7s, Cort Artisans, etc., etc.

Not only IMO, but it 's a fact: If you provide shoddy merchandise to your customer, your quality control stinks, no matter in what country your manufacturer is located.

What exactly are you expecting for the price though. If the basses cost twice what they do, then i would be in your boat, but at $130 shipped for a fretless P bass i couldnt really care less. Its a chance Im willing to take. I coudl recieve 2 basses, send them both back for a different one, and on the 3th one recieve a good one and still have a good deal on my hands...

I just got my Ash Jazz 5 for Kurt - here's my take:

It's built better than my MIM Fender Jazz 4

As expected - the pups suck, but i planned to put some Barts in there anyways (also an Aggie 3 band)

There are no block inlays (the blocks seems to be painted) - the binding on the neck is not binding (it seems to be painted) - i really don't care - it looks cool from the stage - people are not going to notice or care.

the "B" sucks - but what do you expect from a $300 bass? i do have a .120 tapered Ken Smith and it plays like arse - i just have to use a .130 or .135 (higher tension string) - i'll make the "B" work, i'm not worried.

the string spacing is tighter than i like, but i already knew this - i can work with it.

this bass is heavy (i actually like heavy basses) and the neck is thick like a 75' Jazz - i am really happy about that - i like bassball bat necks!

the tuners are crap, but that's expected - it's a $300 bass

I expected all of this, i want to slowly but surely upgrade this bass - this is my plan.

am i happy with this bass? you bet your arse!
would i order from Kurt again? not right now (my house needs a new central air unit, but after i get that - i am getting a Brice 6)

i made my MIM jazz sound like a $2000-$3000 bass, i can make this one sound just as good if not better.

i'm more than happy.

just my 2 pesos

Figjam, for $300.00 I expect at least a playable bass, that's it. Read my review, which includes all the flaws the bass has, and you might know what I am talking about.

yes, and set setup is excellent. It's a 34" scale, but the low A (I D-tune) is very tight, the string spacing accurate, the action very low, and the 3 band preamp is very versatile, contrary to the Brice's preamp, which crapped out within a few hours due to faulty wiring (one of many discrepancies on that "dog").
Hmm well Ibanez's quality control varies as well so maybe you got a winner on your hands.

I know for sure someone had to see and hold the bass I recieved. It was shipped in the case I also bought. So it indeed was handled out of the factory box.So the way I see it unless a 6 year old boxed it,the quality control sux. It's mighty hard to miss loose strings and the head cocked forward with a seriously sharp delam on the back of the neck!Man employee #14 needs to go fry burgers!I just hope the next one shows up playable.I'll repost the results soon.
