Only a month ago I plugged directly into PA at a small venue and was complimented on my playing and technique by another bassplayer !Doesn't get any more space efficient than that!
Except maybe if they go overkill with the PA.
But that's a different topic.

If they request a smaller amp, I’ll ask if going direct is an option. If not I’ll bring a smaller amp. If they want a four, I’ll bring a four. I have preferences but I can work with whatever a situation needs.
Depends on the gig. If you have PA support, I always have a WTDI with me. With no PA support it would depend on the room and what type of music I’m playing and how loud I need to be. I have a couple of smaller Eden combos that I can set on end that don’t have a big footprint and they are rated at 320 watts each. More than enough to cover most situations.
I've been very happy playing my Quilter BB800 and GR Bass 212 Slim at rehearsal. Surprisingly loud, clear and powerful especially compared to the crusty olde Peavey rig at the studio. But with a very small 15x14 footprint and together they weigh less than 32lbs.
I’ve rocked my little Ibanez Promethean 3110 on very small stages when I didn’t have to carry FOH. It’s a sweet little amp - and could drive an extension speaker and FOH if needed.

Thanks! Just a little sumthin’ I whipped up in my shop. Four Eminence 2510s and a switchable horn.
Footprint is only 14” by 20”.
I've never been told to bring a small amp to anything, but I'm ready in case someone does.
Not sure what I'd bring, though. I could either go with a Phil Jones Cub II amp or a Briefcase amp, both of which are mind-blowingly tiny for a bass amp, but would not be able to keep up with an energetic drummer; or I could go with my Phil Jones C8 cab with a GK MB Fusion 500 on top of it, which has a very small footprint but which could blow the eardrums out of an offending drummer were I to so choose.
I suppose if it was an audition, I would bring one of the smaller amps. I actually use my Cub II as my studio bass amp in my guitar player's (finished & furnished) basement.
In today's bass amplification world, small is the new big.

I use the same rig I always use. Or? No rig. I don't need to hear myself at all to play well. I can use my SansAmp, or, just run a cable to the board. No monitor necessary. My every day, every gig rig is mighty. It can do anything required. But I don't need it.
Funny thing is, my regular acts HATE when I bring no rig. Making my jobs easier. They accuse me of being obstinate. An @$$4013. Heh. But what that really means is that they appreciate my tone, and what my tone means to the feel of a particular event. A happy player is an asset. Use what you use. 810. 212. Pedal. Use it Respectfully. You'll get called again.

For jazz and acoustic gigs, the Acoustic Image Coda combo is tiny. And it has nice bass dispersion. I put it under a grand piano and no one notices and the upright doesn't even looked like it is amplified. Or the EBG for that matter. I have a Wizzy 10 (350 watts) if I need more cabs.
Yep correct. I did not realize that the footprint of the SVT is smaller than a Fender Twin or JC-120. 2 EA Wizzy 1X12 do not look big at all and nowadays that's what I bring for louder gigs. My biggest cabs are Mesa Boogie Diesel 1X15 and a 2X10. The case can carry the weight of the 15 and 210 So I lift them up sometimes if needed. I think the cases are heavier than the new Neo 1X15's

Maybe they mean there's not enough space in the back of the truck for a big amp. I can't easily fit my Bass stack into my car but can fit my small Roland cube in. The stack hasn't had any real use since I bought it some years ago. It sits in my rumpus room taking up space, I should really sell it...but..... Like GAS I think I suffer from AAS 'cept I can't afford it.
Smallest I bring is my helix and a headrush 108 frfr. It'll do for most bass stuff until you're playing with a very loud drummer or if you need ridiculous low end. So a floorboard and a very small power speaker (2000 watts, of course that's "behringer" watts (headrush/behringer same old specs), but it's bloody damn loud and sounds great for something so small and light.
If I bring an amp, it’s still a TC electronic rig with either an RS212 + RS210 stack or I might just bring one of those cabs. But the nice thing is that the footprint on stage is the same but I can get the sound up to my ears with the stack, and it’s really loud if I want. I’ve toyed with the idea of swapping the head out for something newer but I really like that cab footprint.
I still bring the Aguilar SL410. It's three inches wider than my Markbass CMD 151P. If that three inches really makes a difference to everyone at the gig, well, I'm afraid there's nothing I can do to help them.
