Nah, he's fine. Just a little nervous about going outside his comfort zone with unfamiliar gear. You could just as easily see it going the other way, after all.

"Bring a small amp, there's not much space"..

On a few occasions I’ve plugged directly into the PA and it’s solved the space problem - and the Bass has filled the room better than I expected
This is my main rig for small to medium shows anyway, as we always have foh. The stand angles it up nicely for better monitoring. My large show rig was a Bergantino AE410 (which I still own), but I just bought a matching Schroeder Mini 12+L for a stack. Now I have a 45 pound 212 option with, as others have mentioned, the same footprint as a small cab.
SWR SM-400 with a Goliath Junior 2x10 most times -or- an Ampeg B100R 1x15 combo for those low volume coffee shop/bookstore type gigs.

Kind of what I was thinking. Bring a U5 and a rack with your IEM system in it. Problem solved!
'Small rig' a head and (2) two 1x12 cabs. DI into PA with the single 1x12 can cover alot of stage gigs and the 2nd cab is available if it turns out the space is not really an issue. Vertical space usually is not an issue.
I have gigged this. Ampeg Micro CL with its 2x10 mini fridge. Louder than it looks and pretty easy load in. Small enough not to frighten guitarists with insecurity issues.
An earlier poster had it right, though: the guitar player and drummer will take up all the space. You will be squeazed into a corner, unable to move your legs to even step on your pedalboard, which you also won't have room for. To make matter worse, the guitarist will plug his crap into your power strip without asking you, because he doesn't think ahead to bring the proper cabling, etc. Then you will be repeatedly asked to turn down even if your amp isn't switched on yet. Have fun.

This is precisely why people make 610's - for when a fridge is too big.
Thew fact that they ask the bass player to downsize is the silliest thing I can thing of - the guitar amps are the things that can be downsized without an issue - you might (probably, actually) even get a better mix with small guitar amps

While the guitarist won't like it, this is precisely the correct answer - less floor space, still enough displacement to work well.
Show up with a Super Bassman w 810. "You said to bring my small amp. This is my small amp."
I would need more information. What are the other players using? What is the size of the venue? What volume do they anticipate? Is there PA support?
