Bringing an expensive bass out

I've brought my only 5-string MTD 535 ($3200) to about 3 gigs. On the third gig I put a small scratch in the back as I was rushing to pack it up. oohhh the river of profanity that came spewing out of my mouth that night.

I never used it much to begin with as I came to realize I'm
a 4-stringer. It's been sitting in my studio for about 2 years, I'm thinking of putting in on ebay soon.

I agree that the only reason to buy a bass (aside from being a collector) is to play it. You (and your audience) can't enjoy it if it's sitting at home.

That said, certain outdoor gigs are a special case. You know the gig -- a music festival in a park with a dozen bands and bazillion people.

Way too much access for way too many people to cause potential mischief. :rollno:

I'm with those who say you buy your basses to play them, so I regularly use my best basses on gigs.

That said, for those few rehearsals I go to straight from work and the bass is left unattended in the car all day, I take my £150 "beater".

I suppose if some collector spends $15,000 on a 60's pre-CBS Fender, they'd probably be wiser not taking it to a rough gig... especially when a $300 MIM would do the job just as well. :eek: ;)

i usually bring both my 4003 and my stingray to my shows, i dont really care. i watch over them like a hawk so no one will taken em because there been some shaddy ass people at some of my shows. At one show i played all the equipment was keeped in a room (except mine which was in my car) and someone in one of the bands got both tehre gibsons stolen and there 68 jazz bass. they recovered them later that night and the fate of the theifs was not very pleasent.

I'm with the majority.

Why would you spend your hard earned money and keep her home all alone and then go out with some skank bass that wont treat you right.

Even the most expensive, exotic basses was never meant to be a wall flower that you take out of the case on rainy days. Take her out and show her the town.

I rent, so I have renters insurance with a separate clause for my musical equipment.

I have gigged, and will continue to gig with my Ritter (action shot in my profile). Thankfully playing bass isn't like driving...no one stops me because they think I stole it. :hiding:
