Yes, as said above, they are meant to be played.
However, I try to use good judgement...I don't usually take my fragile old Tyrolean upright into hostile environments. That includes places that are likely to be really rowdy and crowded, and places where heat, humidity, sun, etc. are intense.
And, my old old old p-bass stays home 'cause I have a somewhat newer one that I think sounds better. Either way, I advise getting instrument Insurance if you can.
