Broughton Audio Super Thread

I think it is a bit more than just an addition of an XLR...

Mids dimed is "flat" when Bass/Treble are 0-1ish. Essentially Mids are cut only
I personally think the giant transformer and 400V caps have more to do with the sound than the tubes honestly, in either SSDI and P15 - you don't get that kind of clarity and punch with the SSDI without sheer power on tap

SSDI talk brings me to this question, has anyone with a Studio Boost, and Studio One for that mater, found that mixing the SB/S1 with a P15 gets too saturated? Of my basses only my stingray is playing at the moment, so maybe it's just the bass grit, but when I use the boost and P15 it almost gets too saturated. I have new strings in today for my PJ so maybe a "vintage" setup will be better. It does sound more clear, obviously, with the P15 gain backed down, and the same setup into a SSDI sounds like sheer bliss. It's hard to pinpoint, and describe what the studio pedals do. I would love to use it with my P15, but the clarity I guess? Just begins to fall off with light/mild breakup

Yes, this ^.
Like I've said, it's the weight, punch and heft that the SSDI and P15 add to each note more than the tubey character for me. I mean, the character is also fantastic, but you can get similar character from the Super Stack or to an extent the Silver Deluxe. But there is a sheer weight behind each note that comes out of the SSDI that I have not been able to replicate elsewhere. It makes me feel like I'm playing with such authority, for lack of a better description.

That being said, the Super Stack through a good DI also sounds very, very good. But it's not the same.

I've always found that the P15 has had a little breakup from my signal chain. That's what I really like about it. Truth be told, I haven't used the P15 all that much since getting the SSDI. I will agree that the SSDI is way cleaner...it's the perfect marriage of that modern hi fi clarity I really like brought to life with tubes. I also run way too much stuff in my chain so there's that too. P15 is better suited for bass > cable > P15 in my opinion.

Can’t comment wrt to SSDI, but can confirm that I’m usually very happy with a simple chain and the P15. I know I said this recently, but the P15 forms the core of my sound these days and I’m mostly just sprinkling in pedals for fun and a bit of versatility.

Current recording chain is simply P bass > P15, followed by some gentle compression (dbx 160a) and tape effect (Strymon Deco), direct into my UA Apollo Duo. It’s pretty much mix ready by the time it hits the interface.

The way some of y’all talk about the SSDI makes me really want to try one, but based on my pedal experience with a few other Fender tone stacks, I’ve realized I’m just more of a Bax/Ampeg guy when it comes down to it.

I’d wager that it’s the true high voltage power supply that brings the joy with the lunchboxes.

If it makes you feel any better, as much as I love the SSDI and could play with just that in a pinch, I far prefer it with either the SVPre or Fliptop in front of it, depending on my mood. I barely tweak the tone controls on the SSDI. It's mostly just become a really expensive . . . but totally worth it . . . beefer-upper and flavor enhancer.

And stick an RFE after it? Fugghedabouddit!

oh I don't have a problem with the P15, clean or not, just when I use a studio boost/one in front, does anyone have a problem with too much saturation with a hot bass and that setup?

I hear you about the Fender stack, I'm having difficulties with a SLO at the moment in that regard, I only use the SSDI EQ to really trim and lightly adjust things, and mids even like a 2nd gain, I use the SSDI as a true tube DI than a preamp, whatever I have before the box is what really EQs things, mainly the tilt on the monocomp

I think I've experienced what you're describing here, yes, even with typical passive Fender basses. I haven't used the Studio One in a little while, but from what I remember I had to tip the red knob back a bit from where I usually run it when running into the P15.
