Broughton Audio Super Thread

I saw that. :(

I've actually been thinking of getting a Neve pre for the growing home studio, for vox and stuff. Anyone ever compare Broughton Studio One with an actual Neve preamp? (Basically, I want my vocals to sound as good as my bass does through my S1.) Is Neve gear really "all that" in the year 2021, or was he kind of like Leo Fender, that he had great ideas, but other companies have picked up those ideas and run with them?

I picked up a recording interface with a couple of Neve designed transformers built in recently, Steinberg UR-RT2. Curious to see how it sounds and how similar or different than the Studio One.

In other news, picked the Ricky up from the shop, and the new shielding, new harness and pots, and setups have her sounding better than she ever had!

It’s still all that. It’s the studio one / boost. That goodness that you miss when you turn it off but never realized it was on.

What pickups are those?
Seymour Duncan’s.

Swapped out the originals around the time I rattle canned it, and later gave them away with a newer late 90’s Rickenbacker that I’d purchased with after market pickups and sold later.

Looking back I didn’t sell the bass for much more than I’d pay for just those OG pickups now, and I threw them in for free... Face Palm.

The Seymours do sound pretty good though.

The FT to me is ... flat. It's the best way I can describe its sound in comparison to the others (I talk about it more in my comparison elsewhere). Even at 24V where I got the best sound out of it, it just was lacking for me. I know so many love it and as an Ampeg and B-15 guy, I truly wanted to love it. I didn't and moved it on. That doesn't mean it's not a quality product.
I've read your review (several times) of the FT vs the Slampegg versions, and based on my current experience with the FT, it's only made me feel more excited to get the Slampegg! I really like what the FT is doing to my tone, so if the Slampegg is better then I'm giddy. The problem for me comes in the law of diminishing returns. Yes, things can sound better, but at what cost, and is it THAT much better? I also know I am an uncultured swine with amateur's ears and skill, so I'm unlikely to pick out some detail that others will. That said, I like what I like and have expensive tastes (or so says the Mrs).

Pardon any previous snarky comments. I'm happy for your P15 epiphany and hope GAS stays in remission. May we all be as lucky.

You guys pulled me back in....

I got a deal on a Flip Top and finally gave it a whirl last night. It sounds great. Really great. It also makes me think if I keep it I'll have to kick the grizzly overdrive off my board since I was using that for b15-ish sounds.

The FT isn't a great overdrive, which is where the grizzly shines, but that's not why one buys the FT.

Now I have to wait for the Slampegg to come next month for me to make my final decision (I'm not getting a p15 under any circumstances).

What are your favorite settings for the Flip Top?
So far for me, dime the volume, bass at 2 and treble at 11:30, cab off. Yours?
There's a thread for that Broughton Fliptop settings
the more the merrier

Are you getting a slampegg x or mini tube?

Neve gear is "all that" for sure. He continued to innovate ALWAYS just as Leo did, so there is that similarity. The Portico series stuff is absolutely mind blowing...the most musical EQ and compression I have used/heard...so much fun dialing things in with them. If you like the Studio One, you will want a 1073 of some sort, whether Neve or a clone.

I’ve ordered a P15! I was already eyeballing one for over a year, but i always was too late when i checked the website.

Now yesterday my old REDDI crapped out on me during souncheck of a radio gig and while the soundcrew where getting me one of their cheapo house DI’s, I’ve ordered a P15 on my phone right then and there. Very much looking forward!

I’m assuming the handle is removable though, right?
