Broughton Audio Super Thread

No, and I'm not going to.

It's for the same reason I don't play $10k basses at the shop, not test drive a tesla. I know me and don't want to make myself afford nice things.

The p15 is also hardly pedalboard friendly, so it's not a consideration. I'm sure it's lovely.
I gotcha, they are on pedal boards but definitly not ideal. Not mine, but im sure there's got to be some b stock p15 we could trade around lol

You've seen pics of mine right? Totally works on a pedalboard.

That said, with all the money you wind up spending on other stuff, getting that one nice thing you know works winds up being cheaper in the long run :)

Also, as I've posted elsewhere, the FT is a distant fourth for me after the P-15 and the two Slampegg variants. I wanted to like the FT. I just didn't.

Last week, the guys I was playing with loved the P-15 over the Slampegg which to me is very good in a live context. I liked what the X brought to the table for one tune specifically since it's the 12AX7 so it's slightly different tonally. The P-15 really is all that and a bag chips, though. Worth every damn penny.
"Can fit on a pedalboard" and "pedalboard friendly" are very different things.

I also spent the money for the effectrode blackbird a while ago which is magic on guitar and I'm starting to like it more and more with bass. The FT clearly beats the grizzly as a preamp, so now I'm testing the FT against the blackbird. When my sushi box boxes come, then I'll see what your talking about with your review.

Once I settle, I'll do a grand sell off.

You have to do what's right for you. My path doesn't work for everyone but I no longer have GAS when it comes to my sound.

For now...

I actually mean it. What I've been looking for the past 5 - 10 years is my B-15 sound in a much more portable package but also louder. I kept making tradeoffs one way or another (size, weight, sound, volume). I have the balance of the four now. My rig is slightly bigger and heavier (mainly the pedalboard) but we're talking a few pounds, not 20 or 30. It's not a combo amp but that is where I made the most compromises more than once.

In a way, the pandemic allowed me the time to figure this out, get it set up, and configured.

The Fliptop is good but it doesn’t bring the heft and authority like the p-15.

The FT to me is ... flat. It's the best way I can describe its sound in comparison to the others (I talk about it more in my comparison elsewhere). Even at 24V where I got the best sound out of it, it just was lacking for me. I know so many love it and as an Ampeg and B-15 guy, I truly wanted to love it. I didn't and moved it on. That doesn't mean it's not a quality product.

Interesting… I'm also looking for a "always-on" tube pedal for a warmer clean tone, and I've almost decided to buy a Blackbird. The preamps Scubaduba compares are too expensive for me, but on the other hand, I already bought 3 affordable tube preamp pedals and they don't really satisfy me. Something tells me I would love the Blackbird, but I can't find any bass demo online. My only fear is that the EQ section has a strong mid scoop, so if you make it flat with a 8 / 5 / 8 (o'clock) setting, you don't have a lot of flexibility from there… What do you think of the Blackbird EQ?

The blackbirds eq is subtle. You don't get the drastic and wide range adjustment of other boxes, but what you get is good on nearly every setting.

If you want an always on warmer and a bass specific eq, try the super stack. It's really warm and has wider range than the blackbird, but it's not going to cut it on guitar.

I have a particle accelerator pedal coming next month, so I'm excited to compare these pedals with bass and guitar.

Transboost is amazing. I knew it’s what I needed. I play Kubicki’s in passive (just cause I prefer the signal over active for big chain effects especially). The passive signal inherently on these Basses are on the weak side IMO so I’ve always had to boost it. I had time today to put it up front next to the Valve Caster and,,,,,,everything else down the line receives it loud and clear. Octavers fuzz. Everything sounds like I always wanted it to. Nothing farts out. This things planted (always on) for sure. Dial in as much as you need. Oh yes. This thing has a beautiful natural break up. The distortion is something I didn’t even expect.
I highly recommend getting a Transboost. Definitely some good clones of the circuit out there. Almost went for one a few times, and after holding out for the Bro in retrospect I should’ve got one long ago.

Well after a few hours of experimentation, my favorite pedal order for the Fliptop goes like this:

Killface > LAB > Fliptop > Silver Deluxe

My brain tells me, logically, the SD should go before the FT's cab sim, but my ears seem to prefer having the SD last in the chain.

I should’ve kept my SD

I should buy a Fliptop

I'd love to try it...kinda, but it still may be too fancy for me.
I understand, it is expensive, you could get an entire legitimate cab and amp for that kind of money, I honestly have all of those pedals and use the P15 more did any of them combine

I hear you, you could buy an entirely legitimate rig, amp and cab for that kind of money. I have all of those pedals, and use the P15, even by itself more than anything, something special about it, probably the tube,no one else uses

What were the settings for stacking the Silver Deluxe into the Fliptop that was enjoyable? I tried em going into the SSDI and also through The Problem Solver on its own to take the SSDI coloring out of the way and found I prefer the SD on its own as well as the Fliptop on its own. Sum didnt seem better than the parts on thier own.

Still learning my way around the Fliptop. I've been happiest cranking the Master and keeping the Gain below noon. Bass and Treble flat-ish. Crank the Cab Sim because it's the fun new toy. :)

Then for the SD I run a pretty basic 2-10-2 "flat" EQ. I feel like it's adding some sparkle and harmonics. Fliptop by itself is a little dull, but the SD gives it back that sparkle. It's putting back some of the stuff that got cut by the Cab Sim.
