Exactly. No problem if I clank through an amp, but going direct with only rudimentary options on the mixer side makes it very … “aggressive” is the wrong word. “Metallic”, in a not-Metal-Music sense describes it better. It’s less of an issue with my MIM Fender P, but still there.

Nothing like fresh Roto's but I use my LPF to tame them (when needed) so I can vouch for this. Fdeck HPF & Broughton LPF are new age game changers for me.

No but I have them on my short list to try. I like the DR line quite a bit and eventually want to make my way through their roundwound offerings.

Right now I am running Nickel Lo-Riders on my P-Bass. Strong fundamental, probably from the hex core. Kind of reminds me of a less metallicy, warmer, version of the Ernie Ball Cobalts. They also kind of remind me of GHS Pressurewounds, but again, warmer.

Huh... I thought the Pure Blues sounded pretty decent out of the package, but lost their tone pretty quickly. Like two weeks quickly. I thought they were defective. The store did me a solid and got me another pair. They were just as "not durable". For a nickel string I use Foderas. Better sounding, longer lasting, and less tension than the Pure Blues. Please note, I'm not an anti-DR crusader. I love the Fat Beams, and use them on a different bass.

Just my opinion, of course.

I used Fat Beams exclusively for years. But Nickel Lo-Riders are my new favorite. But then, I like tight strings on my 35's.

Hmmm... Some seems amiss here - new strings could (actually should) change your tone, but should not wreak the type of havoc you're talking about here. This kind of "painful clank" should be easily rectified by adjusting gain or EQ. Some diagnostic ideas for you to try:

1. Try the bass into the PA without the pedals.
2. Check the battery in your bass.
3. Check all of your instrument and pedal cords INDIVIDUALLY.
4. Check your pedal settings, particularly the SV Pre. It can get pretty "clanky" all on its own

Incidentally, how long is it since you have changed your strings? What strings did you have on before? Is there any way you can post a picture of the channel on the PA the you are running into?

That’s actually what I like about the Nickel Rotosounds. They break in fairly quickly, for me 1-2 weeks of playing, and then stay pretty much the same for the next 2-3 months. I’d rather have strings that have a consistent tone over most of their lifespan, but lose sparkle (for lack of a better word) quickly, than strings that shine 1-2 weeks longer, but deteriorate more and more afterwards.

Mind, the clank issue I mentioned above and why I ordered a LPF only has little to do with that break-in period. It accentuates it, naturally, but I hope the Broughton will also help me control the amount of FOH clank better over those 2-3 months following the 1-2 weeks of super-harshness.

I just don't think that you should need an LPF to "un-klank" your sound. There should be other options open to you given the gear you have.
