Broughton Audio Super Thread

Interestingly enough, the Fliptop Boost does not seem to play well with other pedals. When I drive another pedal with it, the Fliptop Boost pedal clips..and clips hard. Sounds like a blown speaker. I have the dial around noon, so no drive coming from the FB itself and it just seems odd that the pedals after it would make it clip. How does that work?
It's interesting. I thought it was just me. Granted, this is all through my headphone setup at this point, but it really does not seem to play well with some other pedals because there seems to be soooo much gain on tap. I run mine at 18v as well.

I like the tone of it first in chain, but I can't turn the gain up hardly at all without making everything - or at least something - after it fart out.
I tried several spots in my chain the other day, and found it also sounded good after boost and compression and my LBA 2020's, before the SVPre. But then I'm pretty sure it was making the SVPre fart out, which I've never heard the SVP do before. Like, not too much gain and overdrive farting. Metallic electronic clipping. And the SVPre can only be run at 9v, so there's no way (that I know of) to give it more headroom.

I like the FTB best thus far with the gain at about 9:00 or higher, but nothing (ampless so far) can take that level of gain, with one exception. If I run it after the SVPre, before RFE and DI, I can turn it up almost as high as I want until the FTB itself starts to distort. The SSDI also takes it well. A regular amp would probably also work well. But I think it's too hot to put just about anywhere else . . . at least if you want to turn the gain up at all.

I don't own a FT Boost, but from my understanding 12:00 would already be a pretty significant amount of boost happening. Could you be overloading something downstream?

I was gonna say if it’s anything like the SV-Boost then Noon is a lot of boost. 9 o’clock was around unity for me.
 
It’s at 18v Which is as high as I can go without ordering a special cable.

That is strange, your saying the fliptop boost is first, and then another pedal, and the fliptop boost clips? How can you tell which pedal in the line is clipping? There's no indicator on the boost, or are you stating the FB is causing the next pedal to clip, as mentioned above, these little boost pedals have a ton of gain, if thats the case

That's exactly what I'm saying. I currently have 3 other drive pedals after the Fliptop Boost and it's the same on all of them. It's definitely the Fliptop Boost clipping, as it has a very distinctive non-pleasant 'electrical shorting' type of clipping. It does not clip my RFE, Diamond Bass Comp, or MonoComp which are all after it also.

All that being said, I've only tested this through headphones and my USB audio interface. Maybe it's something with that, but I have they are not clipping as I can replicate it with very little volume and negative overall gain.

More experimentation is needed here. I really think it's the input of the Fliptop Boost that's clipping, but it's so odd that it only does it when driving another pedal. If I lower the volume on the bass, it clears up.

Does the clipping stop when you turn off the RFE and monocomp? They are down stream? Aside from some strange impedance issue, I don't see how a clip happen in backwards order, but hey stranger things happen

Here's just a quick demo of what the Fliptop Boost does to my Darkglass Vintage Microtubes. All dials on the Microtubes are completely counter clockwise except Blend, which is at 9 o'clock which is just a hair of clean blended in.

It's a 10 second 'Twilight Zone' riff repeated four times.

I had a similar situation when I tried an SV-Boost over the summer and the clips you posted absolutely sound like the same type of clipping I was experiencing. I eventually figured the Boost-type pedals just don’t play nice with my signal chain, so I ended up getting rid of it.

Yes they are downstream and no it does not stop when they are off. In the clip I posted they are not on. You are only hearing clean, flipboost, and darkglass. Nothing else.

Actually the full sized Fliptop did the same thing as well so yeah, sometimes boost pedals just don't work. But I like the sound of the FlipBoost, even better than the full sized Fliptop. I'm just curious and trying to learn why a downstream pedal makes these clip what seems to be the input side.
