Broughton Audio Super Thread

Just to prove that it's not the Darkglass and not my Audio Interface, here's a clip of my Particle Accellerator absolutely killing the input of the Darkglass, but it still sounds pretty good. And then cranking the overall output volume and completely brick-walling my Audio Interface.

Sounds like the Darkglass is clipping not the Fliptop.
I think this. I really like the FTB at full counter clockwise and up to 9 or 10:00 but it has 30-40db of available Boost. That’s a lot for another pedal to deal with and I’ll probably never use that much anyway. But judicious use of it is good. Even at 7:00, it brings something to the party.

It's definitely the Fliptop.

Here's the FlipBoost only with just a hair more gain than the previous clips. It's set at about 2 o'clock. Nothing else. Peak recording level is -15 db so no chance of the interface clipping.

Hmm. Well things don’t clip in reverse order.

I’m not sure what’s going on then unless the Fliptop just has that much more dB boost vs the sushi box.

yeah 30-40 is a lot of boost. It states on that site that unity is all the way down. So at 12 it’s a pretty hefty wallop.

Here's just a quick demo of what the Fliptop Boost does to my Darkglass Vintage Microtubes. All dials on the Microtubes are completely counter clockwise except Blend, which is at 9 o'clock which is just a hair of clean blended in.

It's a 10 second 'Twilight Zone' riff repeated four times.
Completely clean
FlipBoost only
FlipBoost into Darklgass
Darkglass only

Not that you asked, but I quite like the sound of clip #2.

Yep, a little goes a long way on the SV-Boost, and the FlipTop Boost has a similar extreme amount of gain on tap.

40db is ridiculous gain and will easily clip downstream inputs into clipping unpleasantly the higher you turn the dial, especially on non tube devices.

Most boosts max at 20db. So noon on the Flip and SV Boosts is around maxed out on other boost pedals. I could be wrong, but the volume seemed to come on faster than a linear taper on mine when turning it up, so noon might even be higher gain than the maxed out other 20db boosts.

All the way counter clockwise (off) should be unity volume. Turn up super slowly until you find the sweet spot.

Isn’t it impedance?
This is what I mentioned earlier, I still can't rap my head around it but input/output impedance definitely has something to do with gain is "allowed". Do you have a Messenger or headphone amp you could replace the interface with, try the same brand ie broughton, pedals instead of mixing, for now to test, Josh seems to keep them relatively the same impedance

2 o’clock would be roughly 28 db of gain so that could clip on a spike which your recording interface may not be displaying. You have to look at the preamp specs to see how much signal they can accept before clipping. I have Aan Apogee Duet that can handle everything where similar settings on my Presonus cannot due to the weaker preamp. I can’t remember what the particular spec is called but the same thing occurred when I ran the P-15 into it, which can deliver a high dynamic range. Put a compressor at the end of your chain with a high ratio and see what happens. BUT, be sure the FTB isn’t clipping your comp.

Just tried it in front and at the end of the chain with different preamps and with/without my cab sim M with the volume all the way up and no crackle or anything like you have in the recordings.

Might need to email josh

This thing really pushes the archetype nicely.
I've been using the Fliptop as a drive pedal, EQ@noon, CAB barely even on, only use the Drive and Volume, running into a slightly boosted Archetype sounds amazing, nothing like a B15, but amazing non the less -

OT - have you found a good use for the first depth position? I've ran it will much EQ bringing it back up but its a very dedicated setting being if you turn it to 2 or 3 you have to re setup everything else on the preamp. That's the only application I can't figure out

I thought the first position sounded good with my sbmm short scale stingray in the mix. sounded like running a jazz bass bridge pickup solo with the tone rolled back a little. I still need some more time with the archetype though.

There’s so many cool tones it’s hard to decide which one to go with  you really need at least two of them.

You had the volume of the Fliptop Boost all the way cranked and didn't get that electrical cracking noise? I must just be overloading the input of mine. Just trying to figure out why the pedals after it seem to affect the input level.
