Brown Eyed Girl

It fills up a dance floor every time. Thats the best reason to play it. Whether you like the song or not,if the audience requests it,and you know it,play it.
It is the best of the way overplayed songs to play. It has a fun bass line. My least favorite songs to play are Keep yer hands to yerself and of course Sweet home Alabama.
That's a $100 song for my rock band. In other words, we ain't playin' it unless somebody drops a hundy in the tip jar.
+ 1 if you can get it. Or tell the one requesting that you don't know the words but if they will sing it the band will back them which may get you out of it or end very,very badly.
Just cause it came up.... Mustang Sally, the live Los Lobos version.... The groove Conrad lays down can raise the dead and make 'em dance...

BEG, we lay it down about 1 out of 10 gigs. It always goes over. It is actually a pretty decent pop line. I try to play it faithfully to the feel though not necessarily note for note. What I do like abut the tune is getting a room full of drunk boomers singing along... And tipping. As long as they don't go for the mic... We often follow it up with Into the Mystic.
If you don't dig playing pop, gig some other genre...

Spare a thought for the original artists that have to play them over and over for the rest of their lives. Also, their crowd will feel ripped off and may boo if they don't play it.

The only thing I hate is playing any song with other musicians who hate playing that song. Sucks the life right out of the room. I get it, you're too cool for this and would rather be somewhere else. Well I'm not, so stop making the gig miserable for me and play the damn song right.
I try to find different kinds of joy in every song, sometimes it's a great song, sometimes I just like my bass line, sometimes it's great to see the audience respond. Every now and then we get a guest singer, typically from a corporate event or party audience and of course the person wants to sing Honky Tonk Woman, Mustang Sally or something similar. Do I like the song? Not hugely, but I do like the energy I get from how the whole crowd is up on its feet, smiling, singing the roof off the place and having a great old time.
I suffer from short term memory loss. which means I cant remember how the melody goes in the song I'm about to play until the band hits the first two notes, then It all comes back to me. The only song I don't need the music for and I remember how to play is, you guessed it "Brown Eyed Girl". I am so sick of that song but the people like it. They always request we play it and I'm like, Oh no not again.
Funny you should mention this! There's a video on youtube of Pat Benatar introducing "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" and she tells the audience how tired she is of playing that song.
But she says since she's never sang it there before, of course she'll do it.
Exactly how I've been handling it.....not joining bands that play it.If you're in the sort of band that gets asked to do this song, don't get upset when you're asked to do this song.

I wish more musicians who had different goals and ambitions would just stay the hell out of cover bands that play party favorites and standards. Why join a band that plays to the mainstream dance crowd and then bitch about having to play "Brown Eyed Girl" "Mustang Sally" or anything else from "The List"? That makes no sense at all.
And I heard Todd Rundgren stopped performing "I Saw The Light" for a long time out of utter boredom and nausea over the song.
But his fans were not happy about it.
That's what happens when an entertainer denies the audience something they really want. They become unhappy. Bowie and Rundgren can get away with it. Can the weekend warrior cover band get away with routinely alienating their audience?
