i think it depends on whether you consider performing as a task or a privilege. our band generally plays mustang sally, brown eyed girl, keep your hands to yourself, etc. almost every gig. for years now. and we keep getting booked.

It's a little funny that some automatically think that just because I don't care for the song that I don't play it correctly or make it hell for the others that are playing it. lol I play it with a smile, I play it correctly AND I get paid. It was just a question if others don't like playing it as well. haha $$$
Since we're talking van Morrison, I gotta say I truly dislike playing Gloria.
OTOH, I enjoy playing Mustang Sally (I just make it funky as hell), Sweet Home Alabama and Free Bird. No problem with Brown Eyed Girl, but that must be from the fact that it's not on any of my bands setlist lately...

I still play the song because my band mates out number me. 
Like any song, I am going to give it my all, I am just really burned out on the song. My wife has brown eyes so she loves the song. We have changed the lyrics before to Doo Doo Eyed Girl.

We had a request for it last night, and played it to a very crowded dance floor. I don't like doing it, but you have to give the people what they want.
I play Mustang Sally and Brown Eyed Girl quite often and I absolutely hate both of them. It pays the bills and people like these songs so we play them.
Also, we do Simple Man and I told the band that I would only play it if I get a solo. So after the first chorus, I basically play a 8 bar guitar solo on bass. High up the register with bends and hammer ons, etc. Makes the song bearable for me and the only bass wanking I do on a gig.

I always though it should be called generic girl. Over 50% of the world population have brown eyes (though in the US its about 41%, still more than any other color). I guess that helps the song be popular though. Most of us have been in love with a brown eyed girl in our lifetime.... I've had 6 serious girlfriends in my life. Only one didn't have brown eyes...
Well, you could always do a medley of Sugarloaf's "Green-Eyed Lady"/"Brown-Eyed Girl".
The condition is called "hetrochromia," and I bet you could do a pretty good punk song with that title.
Think of a different meaning for "brown eye" and you'll never think of this song in the same way again.
We never put BEG or Mustache Sally on our set list but we ALWAYS get requests for them . So we do em and the crowd packs the floor every time.
Yes, I hate playing songs that the audience loves and that are guaranteed to pack the dance floor.
