I hear plenty of mids but not much bottom and highs, I know they're video cams but compared to the other vids they just not sounding like a bass I'd buy. One question, are they passive? They sound like it, cool I guess for some.

I wouldn't make too many tonal judgements off that video. I mean, it's recorded at the namm show, with an iphone.

I am hoping someone in the Know more than me can post color options , i think I am right in assuming all the SC bass's will be matte , or satin so to speak and if they are offered in the previous brute colors that would include
white
black
red
and the two new colors at namm
tobacco burst
merlot
I don't know if this is correct or not but if someone could confirm it will give brute club members a color to choose to add to their SC5 wishlist

Hey, I for one am very glad there is a lot of excitement about the new Brubaker Brutes. But I would like to caution everyone. Remember, this is a small, boutique builder of monumental basses, adding a price point line for those who want a Brubaker but at this point in life cannot get a USA custom.

It took Fender and Gibson nearly 40 years before they were able to offer a staggering array of options, and even MTD doesn't offer a ton of options. Ton of price points, yes, options, no. Mike Tobias has been doing this now for at least a decade or more, so he has had time to build a brand.

For the current year, the NBS style Brutes will be offered as normal, in the Natural, white, black and red, with the added color choices of brown double burst and blue double burst coming in the late spring production run.

The Single cut will be offered in merlot and tobacco burst for the first production.

i hear you. I have decided not to upgrade my MJX5 and keep it stock. It has the newer pickups and preamp. i've decided to put the funds for the upgrade towards a SC-5. That's easily $500 toward a new purchase.

I'm with you pablomigraine. I'm a big black and maple fan. My MJX5 is black with the black pickguard. It really makes that wide maple board stand out. Although I may opt in the future for a natural with maple board. Looks like I'm going to have to wait for the second production run or so. I'm not partial to the merlot or the tobacco burst and the maple board is a requirement. My last four bass purchases have all had maple boards. Funny thing about it, I've played basses with rosewood boards that were fine. I just think the maple looks prettier.

For me rosewood used to be okay when I lived in CA but here in northern NV it Is to dry it shrinks to much and you tend to get the dreaded fret spout along with removing strings every couple of weeks to oil the fingerboard it is just to much work, I am in process of changing up my red MJX5 I ordered some paint through reranch and it will soon be a matte black with the red burst flame pickgaurd it has i am thinking it will look awesome. After seeing the matte doubleburst at NAMM I got motivated and red has never been my color.

Branching away from the SC for a moment.... I've gotta say.... the decision to upgrade the electronics in my new Brute was not at all as easy as I intended.... these are the second generation pickups and honestly.... there's pickups out there people pay big money for that don't sound as good as these. With both pups on full the tone is honestly really really good.... soloing one pup or the other brings to light some of the weaknesses IMHO.... the bridge pup has neither enough Musicman brightness and attack nor Bartolini growl and midrange to really be usable on its own... its really its own kind of sound and I can see how some people would really love it. At the very least you won't be used to hearing that kind of tone from a MM style pickup. The neck pup is honestly the first jazz pickup I've ever heard that was round enough and muscular enough to he used on its own. Of all the J/J and MM/J equipped basses I've ever owned I've only ever used the neck pickup together with the bridge to varying degrees or not at all.... with the neck pup soloed it has a really nice slap sound and very full aggressive fingerstyle sound. The new owner is gonna love these things!

I hear ya the neck J pickup is a beast , the bridge one is a little thin in comparison but I still use it on it's own , i just roll up the bass to about full and then it just gets mean. if I'm on the front J it is at the detent or just a little boost on the bass . and it's all good

Did two gigs last week, first ones with my MJX-5 and just set up with Ernie Ball Slinkys. My Hartke rig was not back Fromm NAMM, so had to use my 1985 Peavey Basic 60. It is a good amp, but only 50 watts and can tend to distort a touch at higher gain.

Sound guys at both gigs complimented me on the sound of the amp. They didn't know that it was set perfectly flat and that I was using the bass for eq. I am going to attribute the great sound to the Brute with new Slinkys. It really does sound much better then it did with the factory strings.

One kid in the audience thought I was playing a Ric...

I use Super Slinky 5's on my OLP and to tell the truth when they are new I can absolutely kill on that bass and it is almost a selfish pleasure when I'm slapping. The Super Slinky's also have good punch for fingerstyle. The important thing here is if you are on a budget there is nothing wrong with a 'new set' of Super Slinkys. They don't last too long if your hands sweat as mine do. I am going to try some DR High Beams on the OLP and the Brute. I have heard they are the shiznit. I also heard that the SGD Lutherie MM preamp nails the pre-EB MM sound. I'm going to put one in my OLP. When are the new SC-5's going to come out anyway? Man, I want a black one with a maple board, how long between production runs????

Hm, they aren't leather, they are faux leather. Says so in the description.

Even still, I hear they are INCREDIBLE bags for the money, my friend just received one for his Fender Jazz.

I should use strings from the Garden State, but I threw my "all things Jersey" to the wind to help out a local dealer who had the set sitting on the wall.

I think because the strings were sort of designed around the Sting Ray is why they sound good...
