I don't want this to become a bash thread by any means but does anyone else besides me think more than 5 strings on bass is overkill?

I'm a musician, I create art. I use the tools my mind and heart desire.

It's not better, it's just different. But know this... I play bass as a bassist with a "bass" mind set, and no I will not switch to guitar or harp or piano. They are completely different instruments outside my tools of expression.

you posted that I was oppressing your ability to derail a thread about Jean with the "ERB isn't a Bass" stuff. That is what the infraction was.

I also told you via PM that if you think that "ERB isn't a Bass" warrants rehashing, feel free to post a thread in the proper section... not inside a "Bassists" thread.

it could, but the high G-string and the "low" E on the treble side would be confusing. It's a 6th apart. So you're missing out on 8 notes in that position.

Ok James, allow me to respond.

Regarding the two points you gave me last time, I had responded to a thread on Jean Baudin, in which the thread starter posted a link to Jean's video on Youtube of him performing the "Mario Bros" tune. I stated that, although I appreciated the musicianship, I felt that an instrument which doesn't play basslines, and is tapped as Jean does, isn't really a "bass" in the sense of the instrument we know and as "bass" has been defined for hundreds of years. You deleted my posts, and when I PM'd you to query why, I was then given a two point warning for my trouble.

Why is it though, that if a guitar is mentioned on these boards, there's a "tut tut" attitude. Everyone on these boards is proud to be a bassist, or else they wouldn't be here. Yet, if I or anyone else questions a "bassist" for wishing to play in a guitar's range on one of these "Extended Range Bass" instruments, instead of being content to maintain the role of a "bassist", there's automatically a huge furore?

Lastly, I take your statement that I am a person without the "imagination to understand it" as a rather unwarranted personal attack considering the previous tone of the thread and my replies, and as a mod I would have expected a little more. No doubt I will receive a warning for this post too.

Maybe it's a trick of the strings or the neck-through sections, but I often see basses with those monorail bridges and think that they look misaligned relative to one another. Unless that's a design decision made for reasons unbeknownst to me, they often look crooked or unevenly spaced. It still looks like a great instrument, though!

Technically, yes you do. There is an overlap between a standard 4 string bass and a 7 string guitars tonal range.

Yes, you're right. The 7th fret E on the A string is the open E on a guitar. Technically, the D and G strings on a standard bass guitar are already intruding on a guitar's range.

Sorry to butt in on this again, but I'd just like to ask the moderator who deleted the posts that were here, if they could please get in touch via PM and explain why, because the censorship seems a bit oppressive compared to some things I've seen posted on these boards previously. Thanks.

I'm a bassist, always have been, always will be. Range has little to do with the mechanics and such of being a Bassist.

Mark, you've posted that picture of a guitar and the tone of your response as though the 9 string guitar is a standard instrument widely used. I've been playing music for 20 years, and quite honestly that is the first 9 string guitar that I (and probably the majority of people reading this) have seen, either as an image or in real life. For the record, the same as I can't understand a bass which needs to go so high, I can't really understand why a guitarist would want to play so low.

It's to give the strings equal edge-to-edge spacing, rather than center-to-center spacing. If you space them to the centers, the edges (that you actually touch and feel) will feel closer on the lower, fatter strings.

I just want to clarify, this Buckeye SCB 11 string is Roy Graley's.

Al Caldwell has a Solid White Chambered Body 11 string.

sorry... it's the only other 11 i've seen by Ben, and i assumed lol. I saw a picture of al with it once though, thats probably why, i have to say, this is one of my favorite basses ever.... although... i wouldnt trust plucking the high strings at a 34" scale.... possible snap involved, ouch

I didn't know i was starting a fire strom of grudges vendeta's and claiming that Bill Conklin hasn't been making 9 string guitars for several years. we all need to calm down. as per Eddie G. The reason you haven't seen that many 9 strings in your 20 years of playing, is because for 15 years, they didnt exist, about the same with 11 string basses. You are a bassist thus you search the net (as I and many others do) for BASSES, not guitar. NOW, we all need to calm down and respect Roy's Buckeye Beauty.
