Build #2: Fretless Headless 5

Hey everybody, this is my first time using talkbass. I build guitars and basses as a hobby( I also play bass) and really enjoy it. I buy a lot of hardware from Stewart McDonalds www.stewmac.com. They have excellent customer service and a rapid delivery system. It normally takes only 2 working days after you order before the package arrives, and I live in Ireland!

I have built approx 20 instruments to date and do some repair work/modification work aswell.

This is the last bass I built, just finished it November last year(2008)
Burl Poplar/Bubinga body wings
Bubinga, birds eye maple neck with maple/ebony/bubinga veneers,
Bound ebony fretboard with celtic knot inlay(Mother of pearl)
Gold hardware, Bartolini humbucking pickups and an East Pro preamp.
It looks much better in real life, the photos don't do it much justice. I am very interested in building instruments and would be glad to help out with advice if anyone needs some.

Got the hardware on got everything aligned and discovered that the bridge is about 3mm to the right of the tail :eek: . I guess to combat this from taking over the back of my mind, I will fix. If I cut over 6mm to the right, that'll realign it and leave 3mm of space on the other side. I can then just make the cavity for the tail look wider, or at least like I meant to do it ;)

I'm sure i'll think of something :)

Hi there. Welcome at TB. I think you misplaced this post and I don't want to hijack Jason his thread.. but the pics you posted are pics of a genuine Jerzy Drozd bass. Absolutely 100% sure of that (the shape, the Bartolini's (although Jerzy doesn't use them anymore, so it's an older model), the logo on the headstock, the shape of the headstock, the angled tuners, the fb inlay.. no doubt about that). So did you post the wrong pics by accident?

I'm curious to see some of your work, 'cause your site only shows one picture.

Hey guys,sorry for posting on the wrong thread. The bass is a copy of a Jerzy Drozd bass that I built myself. It's flattering to hear that it looks exactly like one, thanks. The logo on the headstock is a "D" for Dolmen Custom. I'll put a few more pics up later with a close up of the headstock inlay, and maybe some of my other work aswell.

That, my friend, was just a joke. Hence the smiley. And on the other hand: you didn't start a new thread, but entered a random thread that didn't had anything to do with your post, so that was a bit of a funny start anyway. Furthermore, you said you've build a bass, but from the pics, it looked like you just made a photo of an existing bass (you didn't tell it was a copy in your introduction). So, I invite you to start your own thread and tell us what you want to (we've got a 'Who are you' thread for introductions) and I'm sure we're all interested in this kind of quality build instruments!

Well, moving right along then. **Dolmen, get your own thread, you rascal... ;) :)

I did fix the mis-alignment of the tail/bridge, so now it'll just be a cosmetic fix to do there. Had to sand down the cavity cover, somewhat closer to where it needs to be now. I ordered the 2 pickups yesterday (should be in next week). Filed the edge of the fingerboard, to slant onto the headpiece string slots. Need to consider putting in the zero fret and string this puppy up to further check that everything else is ok.

Here's the new pics,

Got the hardware mounted back on and cut the zero fret in, fret installed and did an initial string up.


You might see a gap on each side of the tail, won't be that way too long, i've got some scrap ebony to fill them.

The fret slot cut, then put the fret in. I made sure to lay some epoxy before tapping it in.

The b string set screw in the head almost fit, but i had to grind it down a bit, to catch the thread.

Next on the list, is finding the placement of the pots and drilling them.

Beautiful, man.

Now that I look at it... Visually, with the dark fretboard and two black blocks for the bridge - I'd equip it with two soapbars and an ebony ramp in between. Do consider it, please. Or not :smug:

Congrats, anyway. I think i like everything about it, up to now :smug:

Yep, soap bars it is (on order). IIIII'm not so sure of the ramp, it'll cover the nice burst under it, although..... If I have enough scrap from the top (i think I do), I may consider it, but it has to match the burst, sounds like a challenge to me ;)

Thanks guys.

Looks like this will be the last bass build for a while :( (by no means the last), I've got 2 guitars to build (they will have no place in a thread here of course ;) ).I'm just glad to get the work.

After those though, I have a fellow bass player that's interested in a custom, so that's good.
