Build #2: Fretless Headless 5

Sorry I've not commented on this thread before! I've been following it since you started work on this Bass, Jason. It looks amazing, and the 3-tone colour is going to look fantastic!

Thanks,
That was my first one, I need more practice before I can ever do it on that bass.

Interesting that you were thinking of using hardware by Dave Bunker... he got me started in guitar building years ago, though I doubt he remembers me now. I was just a punk kid who wanted to make a guitar, and he helped me out...

Since you are looking at hand-dying (and hand-blending of dye bursts), I can make some recommendations... here's honey amber dye on flame maple... body and neck by Dave Bunker, finish by me (found that pic a while back, looks like it got wet...).

A hand-rubbed amber to brown Tigereye-burst-ish thing... started with black dye on wet, then sanded back to enhance the grain, then yellow over all, then honey amber over all, then brown and red at the edges... it didn't turn out like I initially intended, but it looked pretty good.

Here's a red dye finish... I applied black dye, sanded it back to only leave it in the more open pores, then re-dyed with red... all wiped on, not sprayed, then finished in rattle can Varithane. Pardon the crappy guitar. LOL

Did alot of work today......

Drummer gave me my titanium head piece, he said it took him nearly 20 hours to make. Definitely one of a kind.

Bought the pre i'll be using, then routed the cavity and made a cover. (I have some rare earth magnets for this).

Leveled the neck and shaped it (went for the "D" shape on this one).

how did you do that burst?

how did you do that burst?

Sorta hard to explain in words. Once I start, my eyes and mind take over. More than anything, It took practice.

Start with the center color (yellow), spread it into the mid color section (orange), then did the outer color (red). Blend the colors in the between sections and use denatured alc. to pull the colors (outside in, then inside out) to get your fade. Going to do some more color today.

Took the tape off and sanded down any bleed over (wasn't much at all). Did a base coat of tung oil on the sides and back, i'll start to sand away that with 400 and start going higher. Put a "Finger" access along side the cavity (I'll make that inset black).

I'll order the pickups this weekend (2- EMG 40DC's)

My son's birth is coming shortly :) (by or around April 20), so I won't have it completed before then, but that will allow me to take my time on it, rather than rushing.

Amazing! I like the burst a lot! Really brings out the figure too. I'm almost considering doing one myself (instead of transparent finish).

Yeah, that top you have on yours would be a good candidate.

Just make sure whether you use a dark dye or stain, that you use 000 steel wool to bring it back, takes a little more time, but IME, it's worth it. PM me if you want the notes I made, on dying.

Great looking dye job. Can't wait to see it with a clear coat.

Why didn't you rout the pups out before you dyed it?

Would have seemed more of an irritating problem...... I have not ordered the pups yet...... Although, my Spector has the exact same pups in it, i'd rather wait and make a template with pups that I get, rather than taking the ones out of my spector ;) .
