built a boost with a 15.5kHz LPF... thoughts on frequency?

i designed/ tweaked a boost for bass (about 30db variable), and i put a ~15.5kHz LPF on it. I haven't had the best amp to try it on, i am just curious to see what you think of a ~15.5kHz LPF regarding bass signal.

i will happily take all thoughts, opinions, and critique.

Personally I think that might be too high of a frequency to really have any impact on the tone.

A hpf at, say 40hz, would tighten up the sound a little, which can be useful when boosting the signal for stopping things getting muddy.

OK. I just wish I could put it through a decent rig to see. It totally neuters a guitar (which is obvious). Maybe drop it to 12kHZ? I just want to darken it up a bit.

It's all experimental at this point. Until I can try it on a solid rig, I will leave it as is but may add a HPF @ 40hZ. That could be interesting.

As for lpf, the idea is taming highs from fuzzes and distortion pedals, or to get in Motown-ish territory if set lower. My guess is 15,5kHz too high for both purposes.

This may warrant a trip to Sam Ash to run it through a proper rig. Lol. To see how it stacks up as-is.
 
From what I've see , alot of speaker sims and speakers cap the top end response at around 5k, so (depending on the steepness of the filter) you might actually want lower than that for a darker tone. I find alot of the "attack" part of a signal is around the 1-3k range, so you may want the lpf to take effect from 1k if you're specifically looking for a 'dark' boost.
 
15.5 seems awfully high. I know CRTs are mostly a thing of the past, but as far as I'm aware most people over a certain age can barely hear the 15khz squeal of a CRT in the first place if at all. You might make it easier on the yung'uns though, if your signal is loaded with hi-frequency garbage (which I dearly hope it is not!) :laugh:

Huh. I will do some tweaking for sure then maybe 1.5kHz would be good, as the math is quicker.

How do you guys feel about 30dB of boost? I can tweak that too while I am at it.

Too high IME. If you can't get down to 3-5 khz, it's a lost cause. I use a Broughton HPF/LPF and speak from experience. Also pulled the manual for the Tech 21 Q Strip and the pre-set point is 3 khz which goes hand-in-hand with cabinet simulation. I know what you're thinking: "man, that's low!". Keep in mind that the LPF is providing 12dB of attenuation / octave and not a "brick wall" as often assumed.

To be honest, I'm not sure what that equates to as actual loudness , but personally unless I'm trying drive the hell out of a preamp/valve amp, no boost pedal I use goes above 12 o clock.

My Bass VI uses pretty weak guitar pickups, so I use a boost set to a bit above unity gain but alot is the time I feel that the majority of boost pedals have far more output than I'll ever need.
 
Old school bass cabs didn't have any high end tweeters, so most of the PA sourced bass drivers rolled off around 3khz ish. There's a little bass out put above this figure, up to about 8khz. But it's mostly fret noise and fret clank. Fretless players / fat wound will be familiar with the lower top end that flats have. Effects users can see anything up to 16khz on bass...but to be fair a lot of this can sound over bright.
If I wan't old school overdriven sound, then dial in a steep drop off at around 3.5khz or 2.5Khz if you want a very dark tone. If you just want to eliminate hiss...then a steep roll off over 12khz should do the trick. If you are looking to protect your drivers from sub bass thump, then steep cut below about 45hz.

do your math..... A HPF is what is allowed to pass through the amp to the speaker I thought. At least that is how it works on my Bergantino B|Amp.

LPF ought to be what is cut out of the amp... I can't see how any usable information is in the 15 KZ range for a bass. Bass harmonics are not even that far up there that much.

E string is 41 hz fundamental. G string is 98 hz. Even the D# note of the G string is only 311 hz.

i realize that the frequencies are much higher now, i just overshot it. I wasve been unaware of how high the bass harmonics get. i wanted to increase boost but have LESS attack at the volume, lose the top and the attack and the snap.

i realize an HPF allows higher frequencies to pass. i may be adding one too.

I wanted a LPF to eliminate the attack and pop. i will pop it down to somewhere between 2-3kHz when i get the time and check that out.

but yeah, i guess i did overshoot it, not a problem, its all about learning and experimenting to figure out what works and for me it is entertaining, and fun.

i will adjust and come back.

that is really cool i read it for a bit.

i am set on what i am doing at the moment, just adjusting it to a different frequency. its just a few minutes of math, and some soldering when i get around to it.

what i am seeking is a heavy dB boost that takes out the 'attack' and 'pop' although some may like that. i am just bored and entertaining myself with this.
 
A well-respected recording engineer who I worked with ~35 years ago said "There's nothing useful above 10kHz from a bass guitar" and in all the ensuing years I have yet to find thatobservation incorrect.

I haven't had the luxury of meeting somebody with that experience. i will take note of that.

30 dB is a heck of a boost (most para EQs I've seen are in the +/- 15 to 18 dB range)...is it on/off or can you adjust via a pot?

Side question: A para EQ is not giving you the results you're after?

not really what i am looking for either TBH. i just want a big variable boost, that eliminates a lot of the clank, attack, and pop. Nothing parametric. just a simple RC filter.

My preference would be 5khz... but i tend to roll off pretty heavily over 2khz so what do i know :D

i am just bored and entertaining myself, thank you all for the input. i am an electronics geek who has parts around and just feel like some experimentation.

but what i am looking for is a TON of gain, NO pop, clank, snap, etc.

there is a use, once its dialed in i will try to get a way to record on a decent bass amp and show you all why, or who knows, maybe its a massive flop. either way i am just passing time.
