Bump Keys

Yeah. On the other hand, someone experienced in traditional lockpicking could probably open a locked door in about the same amount of time.

You could go and buy some of the Swiss-made, ridiculously hard to pick locks, but then you'd just have guys kicking your door down, or smashing your windows. With the door in the first video, someone could break the door glass and then reach through and unlock the door.

Like a lot of things, home security strikes me as being more about keeping honest people honest (or encouraging the thieves to hassle the neighbors instead), rather than providing absolute security.

I think a this topic has been brought up a while ago.

Anyway, Dan has a good point. If someone's out to break into your house, with a bump key or not, they're going to have a way to get into your house.

I guess the main issue for me concerning bump keys is that they leave no evidence that the lock was tampered with, so there are issues relating to insurance dealing with stolen goods--for all they know you may have just left your door unlocked.

However, if you did get bump-keyed, I guess you could always smash your lock/door and pretend the intruder did it :D

Good idea, but the Germans are too honest for that.

And yeah, absolute security is very difficult to buy. Even if you have a good setup, it's too much of a bother to use. Only one of my friend's families actually uses their security system regularly.

When I was in Altoona last week, this was one of the lead stories on the local news for a few days. They even showed the video during the report.

I guess they figured some of the down and out criminals did not have access to Google video?
