Bus Beheading...

Dude, shut up. We have MUCH less killings over hear per capita, and you guys get crap like this happen much more then us. Speak for your own country before you start talking about ours.

This was one nut in one instance yes its disgusting but stupid stuff can happen like this anywhere.

I HATE gun discussion but i speak up when somebody starts insulting our system when theirs id obviously less then stellar:rollno:

First off I didn't criticise anything having to do with Canadas system. Number 2 being that I can't remember the last time I heard of someone being beheaded on a bus anywhere on this continent and I never referred to America being any kind of model for how to do things. If you hate gun discussions...well.....don't discuss. Besides, you like Peavey! :hiding:

It is an isolated and tragic incident, my opinions are mine and when it comes to politics, opinions are like.....uh, elbows.

FWIW, Canadians are fine in my book buddy. It's all aboot respect.

P.S.FWIW Peaveys cool too.

so you can have it in your pocket when randomly attacked with no warning or time to use it?

Now that's just silly. Granted, it wouldn't have done the poor guy any good to have one, that's not what he's saying. For people who aren't decapitated in their sleep it can be useful.

Guns and their use isn't a triviality. it's a serious issue and there are people out there carrying that really shouldn't be. Responsible people who get the proper training, license ( what have you) ect. Should be allowed to carry guns. Personally I feel safer knowing that these responsible people do! On the other hand I think there should be severe penalties for weapons related offenses.

Sigh...... Invalid Link Removed

Let it be known I don't want a descent into an argument about the merits of carrying personal firearms. I just think it was a stupid thing to say in the context of this thread.

Well, perhaps if we stopped locking people up for insignificant, victimless crimes, such as smoking dope and prostitution, we'd have far less people in jail (here in America, over 1% of our entire population is incarcerated), then perhaps the system would work more efficiently.

Killing is still wrong, I say, regardless of the cost to taxpayers.

I don't believe it would make a difference. Of course there wouldn't be as many stresses on the system, which is a good thing, but the actual rehabilitation of the criminals is what I'm referring too. Less people in prison doesn't suddenly increase the ability of the prison system to rehabilitate its inmates. There may be more resources available, but ultimately the system itself is hugely flawed. IMO, prison is just a place to keep criminals on the taxpayers dollar, nothing more, nothing less. Few people are actually rehabilitated by it.

Not really relevant to the discussion, but interesting nonetheless. When I was doing my criminology minor, I went to several penitentiaries and interviewed some of the inmates. Some of the people there were homeless who committed crimes just so that they would have a nice hot place to sleep during the winter. The idea of three meals a day and a free room for the winter was an interesting enough prospect for them to go out and commit minor felonies.

Should be allowed to carry handguns in Canada. Yeah, yeah....it could be argued that the lunatic may have had a gun. 1) I'd rather be shot than stabbed and beheaded. 2) I'm of the opinion that badguys will always have guns whether or not it's illegal

So let me get this straight - You introduce the topic of guns into this thread stating that bad guys will always have them, and yet there was no gun involved in this crime and you also concede that the victim wouldn't have been able to use one to defend himself in this case anyway. Then you top it all off by telling other people that if they don't want to talk about guns that they shouldn't discuss it? :eyebrow: Just checking.

As for the actual crime, it's one of the more horrible things I've read in a long time. The fact that it seems completely random makes it all the more awful.

It reminds me of an incident a couple years back when one of my favorite students was randomly attacked by a guy with a machete in the mall at Christmas time. The guy was trying to hack at his neck and ended up cutting off his finger and thumb as he tried to protect himself and stop the bleeding from the initial blow. Fortunately he survived (with the help of some other mall patrons) and the digits reattached.

There are a lot of very sick people that should have popped up on somebody's radar long before these kinds of things happen.

Huh? Yeah, that was the gist. there were no guns involved, perhaps there should have been. If you don't want to discuss guns, why post about it? The victim was gone from the get go. If Knifey McGee got off the bus and came after me or anyone else on that bus I'd be happy as pie to have my Glock.

I'm sorry if what I said may have seemed contradictory. I'd be happy to clarify further if needed.

I think we are in agreement on a few points. Sure, career criminals aren't going to be rehabilitated - but there are criminals who have been succesfully reintroduced to society, with no ill effects. I look at it much in the same way of our school system - too many students per class make it much more difficult to teach anyone anything. Increase the amount of teachers, make the classes smaller, and the entire system improves. Is our education system deeply flawed? Sure, but every little bit helps.
