Bus driver jailed for attack on cyclist

No sarcasm in that post? None at all?
maybe a little.

but........ you gotta wonder what the bike rider did to provoke such an action from the bus driver.
The post showed that there was a "exchange" before the bus driver took him out.

I must stick with my position that "It takes two to tango".
I wonder if we'll ever hear the whole story.

I would agree, he does seem to be stepping it out and not keeping a defined line almost purposefully, there is a little tussle going on there for some reason.

Good looking out Skitch...thanks for not making me look like a bicycle hater!

Still seemed to be within his lane.

Didn't look like it to me, but either way

And the bus driver didn't need to come back in and swipe him :p

Of course not...

I said before I wasn't biased against bicyclists, and I'm not. But it is worth noting that I spent a lot of my childhood riding with my mom on the bus, with my brothers and sisters. I often sat in the front (well, mom wanted me in striking range if need be :p ) and I see this through the eyes of a bus driver. Not to mention I drove one myself for a brief period...

But driving a bus is scary, man. 1/3 of your passengers are crazed homeless people, 1/3 are general dooshnozzles who want to see how far they can push the bus driver before he snaps, and the final 33% are regular folk riding the bus to school or work. On top of that, you're always on the lookout for pedestrians jetting out into the street and cars cutting you off. No matter what happens, the other person will be hurt and whether it's your fault or not, it will haunt you forever.

/anecdotal digression

And you think the cyclist just up and provoked the bus driver out of the blue? Just to be a dick he provoked somebody who could run him down? Really?

If I am jawing at somebody, there is a reason. It does not happen in a vacuum. And to get me acting that way, a driver has to do something that endangers me. The more likely it was purposeful, the more agitated I will be. I will wave off dumb mistakes, or stuff that appears accidental. However, purposefully drive up on me, cut me off, or buzz me, and I will get very vocal and visual.

When I drive, I always yield to the smaller- bikes, pedestrians, motorcycles. Everybody gets to go home alive! In many European countries, that is the law- yielding to the lessor.

I'm a bit surprised at the debate over whether the cyclist was supposed to be riding there in the first place.

Look at it this way: Lets say I'm walking down the middle of the street, obviously impeding traffic and breaking the law, and of course I wind up getting hit by a car.

Scenario 1 has me getting hit by the car because someone didn't see me.

Scenario 2 has me getting hit by the car by someone who started to pass me, and then intentionally veered back over to where I was walking.

How is it so hard to see the difference between the two? The bus started to pass him, veered to the left and hit him intentionally, and then veered back to the right. It was clearly intentional and at that point it doesn't matter whether the cyclist was supposed to be there or not.

The only bit I'll disagree with is the comparison of walking down the street and cycling down it, cycling down the middle is legal :-p

I was hit like this by a truck while I was on a motorcycle for only doing 44 in a 40 mph zone by a school so I'm a little biased and you probably already know where I stand as a cyclist/biker. I've also driven very large trucks/buses in the military and know the responsibility involved for such a large vehicle

The one thing that got me from the article is that you can get a job as a bus driver at 19 in the UK? Short of the military, here in AZ and I think most states won't let you do a job like that until you're at least 21 and sometimes even 25 because of the insurance liability. Regardless of what happened, letting a little moment like that get the best of you to affect your family and 10 year career like that sucks, but actions have consequences. Same goes for the cyclist with a broken leg, lessons learned...

Well so is walking down the middle of the street :) That was my point..it doesn't matter if the cyclist was doing something illegal, since it was caught on video, it was obvious that the hit was intentional and that's all that matters.

as both a regular cyclist in and out of central London, and a regular bus user, i can tell you that a lot of bus drivers hate cyclists, and a lot of cyclists here behave like suicidal idiots :)

however, this case seems pretty open and shut.

Maybe the bicyclist made a threatening gesture towards the bus driver and he reacted only to protect himself.

Show me where I called it self defense. And if you can I will buy you the bass of your dreams.

Exactly what is the difference between self defense and self protection? I'll take another Fodera please.

There is none, of course. Jauqo is obviously posting nonsense just to provoke a reaction from people. It is only a matter of time before he starts complaining about how people are misinterpreting his posts, being rude to him and so forth. This, of course, will be followed by another post where he once again tries to provoke a reaction by posting the same nonsense, probably while simultaneously denying that he ever posted that same thing in the first place.

That's fine, but I want my Fodera.
