It's just normal wear and tear.

Has anyone considered that the upper horn may have been damaged or broken? and the owner at the time that did the mod was just trying to salvage what was otherwise a good sounding and playing bass?

@johnk_10 could graft another piece of wood into it and bring it back to its original P shape. Refin. Goodtogo. There’s actually not that much cut off of it.

Because at the time it was just a used bass and nobody wanted an old bass, they wanted new.

I did the same to a MIJ P bass copy in about 1968 but I took a lot of care to get it to look as much like an EB3 body as I could.

Occasionally at a gig someone would ask if it was a Gibson or a Fender. I used to tell them it was a Fender neck on a Gibson body and nobody ever questioned it.

I would still probably own it if I hadn't been a dumb-ass kid and snapped the truss rod when the nut bottomed out.
