I've got a budget of about $600, any suggestions for the best bass for my buck? I play hard rock, with 4 strings and a pick 90% of the time.

Any bass you like.
On that budget I'd go for a traditional (jazz, precision) Squier VM or CV series if you want bang for the buck.

used warwicks? warwicks have great pick tone too:
although the usual spill here is "go out and play, decide for yourself"

go to a place with ALOT of basses,play at least 5,or more..even ten or so,
if one feel jussst right in your hands, that might be the right way to go.
pay attention to things like:
the proper string spacing
& neck width that enables you to move quickly and comfortably.
good tone,fat not thin and wimpy sounding..
u can get an american Fender used,here..if u try..
or a mexican or standard series one brand new.
Sadowsky is great if u wanna save $1500 u can find a used standard,that's a hi end bass.
or in the middle,ther are Laklands for $700-$750 on TB and ebay,they rule

Take a trip down to Long & McQuade and check out the Fender Standard Precision Basses ( Made in Mexico)
And try the Epiphone SG bass they have there, play it through the Markbass amp they have set up for everyone, you will love it.
You might not like the SG bass that much, but give the P bass a try

I've tried many different basses, I love the feel and look of the Musicman Stingray, a bit pricey though. The P Bass is probably going to be my best bet. I also really like the Jazz basses, and a couple Yamaha basses I've tried I ended up really enjoying, both sound wise and feeling wise. It's coming down to the wire, but I think I may just visit 2 or 3 music stores, try out 5 or so per store, then make my desicion. It's an extremely important desicion so I wanna make sure I pick the right one. Thanks for all the posts guys!

Go to your local GC, and try them all out - see what you like. All you'll get here are everyones personal prefs ... like Ibanez SR series.
