CA Glue, Why Do I Have You?

Hello friends -- I generally handle setups and minor repairs myself, and when going through a box of guitar-related doodads I found a small bottle of CA glue. I cannot remember what I had used this for when I bought it, and I'm not even sure it was for guitar work ... can any of you tell me how it applies cause I don't know whether to keep it with my guitar stuff or toss it. thanks

I have personally only used it for minor finish repair.

I use it for all kinds of stuff, including gluing frets in and the "Luthiers Trick" standing in for double-stick tape. The fumes can be kind of nasty in quantity, particularly something like coating a fretboard with it, but it has its uses. It does go bad over time, either dries in the bottle or absorbs water. I tried storing it in my refrigerator, doesn't seem to make much difference. The tech has gotten better with stuff like Gluboost, which doesn't get cloudy when you kick it with accelerator. I use the cheap Harbor Freight stuff for taping work down, better quality for fret gluing.

CA glue is ideal for gluing nuts in - strong enough to work just fine, and easy to undo if/when the time comes.

If you end up with a nut where one or more slots are too deep, you can raise a nut with CA glue and.....something to act as the other part of a composite matrix. Turns out that the paper bags that some grocery stores still give you are mode out of paper stock that is about .008" thick - that material, when soaked in a bit of CA glue, makes a perfect composite nut shim material - a consistent known thickness, harder than the nut it's holding up, and it turns a nice dark color which, with a black nut, is almost invisible.

I would never use superglue to glue a nut in. Makes them a bear to remove cleanly. I just use regular old Elmer's glue and it has always held just fine but still easy to remove if needed.

Thanks, I'm thinking the nut slot depth correction trick was the thing I had gotten it for.

Or for trying to create a fretless coated fingerboard (although I strongly prefer epoxy or even better, bare wood).

For setup work it's good for raising up nut slots that are cut a little too low.

A superglued nut is easier to remove than one held on with Elmer's. You put a screwdriver against it, tap it once with a hammer, and it's off.

just put 2-3 small drops and don't smear it the length of the slot.

I'm no luthier but I can do quit a bit of "stuff" building and fixing and repairing basses.

Super glue or as stated, CA Glue..........for me is not commonly used but there are times when it is needed.

I've used it on nut slots but I usually use slivers of bone + super glue to raise a slot and then file it down to the correct height.

Used it for screw holes that are stripped, not always but sometimes it's an easy quick fix for that.

IMO, a "tool box" need.
