Cab for V4B

I play a Warwick Dolphin, '78 Pbass and Nash Jazz through a late 60's Ampeg V4B. My current speaker setup are two Hartke 4x10 XL cabs with Eminence Legend Speakers.

I have grown wary of the cab/speakers and want to replace them. They are ok but their low end drops dramatically if you are more than 5 feet from the stack. My sound tends to be finger picked Motown with extended bottom. I occassionaly slap.

I like having the height of the two cabs stacked so I feel the bass from my toes to my head. I am thinking of 2 2X10 cabs on end or a 1X15 + 2X10. I have never played bass in my 30+ years through 12" speakers and don't know what it would sound like

I am thinking of checking out some Bergentinos or Schroeder'. I particularly like what I read about the Schroeders.

Anyone have experience with a V4B and these cabs? Any other cabs (Bag End) I should look into?

The V4 is something like 100W, no? The Schroeder's are very efficient - the 1212 R sounds just fine with my 200w Acoustic B200H head - but while it's built to handle 1,000w, that's playing it pretty slim at twice your amp's wattage.

I did ask Jorg via e-mail if it would fly and he said OK, and his advice has proven correct. Suggest you e-mail the man directly and tell him what head you plan to use, and he'll most likely write you right back with his expert advice.

These amps sound huge with 8x10s, as I'm sure almost anything would. For aesthetic reasons I'd look for a 70s fridge (i like matching stuff) but in terms of sound you'd probably be better off with a newer cab. I play my v4 through a 70s ampeg 4x10 but when I've used my drummers 70s 8x10 in the past it was astounding. Like you said, you can feel the bass at your head and feet.

Some TB'er is selling a 2X15 in Iowa.....a long way from NYC!

The frdiges are sealed cabs and would sound different than my ported Hartkes. The Eminence speakers are supposed to be repros of the ones found in the old Ampeg 8X10's.

I guess the sound I hear in my head is the warmth and tube compression from the V4B through modern high fidelity speakers. The low end reported from the Schroeder's sounds like what I am lookng for....

Anybody run a tube amp through Schroeder bottoms?

I'm looking at the Jensen MOD 10-50 for a cab I'm thinking of building. I have an old Traynor Mark II, which is also a 100 watt tube amp, which is why I'm reading this thread. The Mark II sounds great into a Fane Crescendo 12" in ported cab that I built, but that's not really loud enough for rock and roll.

I've played drums next to the bassist using a V4B into an Ampeg 8x10. It sounded awesome and didn't lack for headroom. I'll be damned if I'm carrying an 8x10 cab though, so I'm thinking a 4x10. I've got another thread started asking about the internal volume each chamber (there are four in the fridge) of an SVT 8x10 is. I'm planning on a roll your own.

KO

I also know you can pick up vintage ampeg cabs pretty cheap and they'll match nicely. I can't remember the model maybe b25 or something? I've seen them on (chicago) craigslist between $200-$600 depending on the condition. I just can't justify buying another cab at the moment - I'm out of room!

Oh yea, they're 2x15" cabs - forgot to mention

I tried out a 21012R with my SVT-II because I got a good deal on it. It sounded sterile and kind of killed most of the tubey goodness of the amp. I sold the 21012 and now use a NV610. I have no gas for a head or cab.:bassist::D

BT25, and I just gave on away for free!!! :p :smug: :D

I used to play through a 2X15 Peavy rig back in the 70's and early 80's...2 X 15 has a certain vintage sound.

An NV610 sounds intriguing but thought I could get away with a smaller rig...like 2 2x10.

Thanks for the 21012R review...definitely want to maintain the mojo of the V4B.

First step is selling one of the 4x10 cabs I own....I figure I could get between $350 and $400 as the speakers are a year old.

After playing several gigs these past few weeks I went from two 4 x 10's to one 4 X 10 which handled things well...plenty of volume and I received compliments on my sound.

At this point I think I am going to seel the two cabs and get a Schroeder 21012 with the neo's...this should be plenty for gigs with no PA support and use as a monitor on the bigger PA gigs. I don't see a need for schelpping vintage bottoms around...as it is, am very cautious with the v4b (anvil case).
