Cab Impulse Response Megathread

The only difference is the HElix packs only have the WAV files usable with a Helix and also have 6 presets for them.

I didn't offer Helix packs for all my cab packs, because the ones I did sell, most Helix users opted to get the WAV packs instead. So it was a bit of wasted effort on my part IMHO continuing to expand the Helix line of offerings on my site.

Thanks for the explanation Doc, makes sense.

It's gone a bit quiet in here.....

Just wondering if anyone had tried any of the Dr. Bonkers more modern cab IRs? I bought the SULA 215 pack and it sounds really cool. I'm looking for something with a bit more of a modern, open sound. I'm thinking primarily of any of the GK 410 or SWR 410 models.

Or if anyone can comment on how the Redwirez bass cab IR pack sounds? Mostly the Aguilar DB115....I'm thinking that would have a more modern sound than the Sunn 215?

I'm still really quite happy with most of the Shiftline CAB IRs, but most of them are aimed at vintage style tones, and the 2 that have a brighter sound have quite a unique character (Hartke and Mesa).

I haven't tried the Sula 2x15 pack yet as I'm still tinkering with the IRs I currently have, but that pack is on my "for a rainy day" (aka "when gigs start coming back" ;)) list along with the Mesa RoadReady 8x10 and Sula 2x12 packs. I posted some sound samples of my current favs in post #94, including the Redwirez Aguilar DB115. I don't have any experience with the actual cab to know if the IR is accurate or not, but it does sound a bit more modern and is among my top favs that I float between. It's a great compliment to the more vintage sounding PF115 response from Dr. B.

I went and purchased the Redwirez Bass Box last night. Man are there some options in there.
My favourite options without trying too many - the Ampeg B15 mic'd with the D12 at 2 inches cap\cone edge or even straight cone.
Playing my L2000 with some slight overdrive with a pick - these combos slay. Definitely my new favourite IRs by far
Not far behind is the Redwirez 810 - this sounds great too in the same combos.

So I have a few cab sims I got the dr bonkers orange 8x10 the 3 sigma ampeg 8x10 the celestion 4x10 plus the new shift line free ir pack. From working with everything I found the 3 sigma ampeg 8x10 is the best all around and the shiftline cabs are a gods blessing they sound so good and the ampeg model is real close to the one I paid for. I’m loving the sunn 2x15 the most so far and the ebs 4x10 kills the celestion one. If anyone is looking to get into cab sims start with shiftline since it’s free and sounds good most would be content with that.

If you have either of the Cabzone products or an Olympic bass preamp from Shiftline I recommend creating the cab IR and poweramp patches. the tones sound better to me. More punch and a variety of different "harmonic" energy.

I'm still really loving the Redwirez Bassbox IRs. Ampeg B15 and Aguilar DB115 IRs with a Neumann U47 on axis, 2 inches from cap/cone edge. Sounds incredible. Notable shout outs to the D12 and Re20 microphones too positioned in the same spots.

I'm a newb when it comes to cab sims/IR's etc, but find myself quite interested in them as tone shaping devices. Are you cab sim/IR users running these boxes in your live rig with actual amps and cabs and FOH support, or are these better suited for tracking or IEM situations to sweeten up the in ear tone ?

I use a few devices in front of my amps/cabs now ... Noble DI (light EQ/preamp stacking) and sometimes the Tech21 VT Deluxe which I understand has an always on cab sim in the signal path.

thanks

At the moment I am using them mostly for recording, and piping to my IEMs during practice. I might use them for shows; if there are ever shows again.

I don't run the IR into my stage rig.

I run my cab sim last in the signal chain on my pedal board. I run the unaffected out from the Cabzone to my stage rig (so it gets all my pedal sounds but no cab simulation), but when I am using FOH support I run the affected signal to the PA.

When in a quite\acoustic band setting I just run the pedalboard including cab sim straight to the PA, no stage rig. I just out some bass into my foldback or IEMs.

And recording - same deal. Full pedal board and cab sim into Focusrite 2i2, then straight into DAW.

I use the DB-1x15 from the Redwirez pack quite a bit. It sounds fantastic really full sound and great mids.

I ordered the NUX Mini Studio and should have it by Tuesday this week. Looks like it comes loaded with the guitar cab IR's, but NUX seems to offer a set of bass cab IRs too. So, I'll have to figure out how to get those before I try it out in any serious way. Should be an interesting entry to the new (to me) world of cab impulse response.

I have been considering Nux Mini Studio as well. Please let us know what you think...

My understanding is that you can access the bass cabs by holding the switch for 2 seconds (until the flash light changes to orange).
