Cab Impulse Response Megathread

Is anyone interested in the upcoming release of Amplitube 5?
I like their guitar sims, but wasn't wow'ed by their bass selection in ver 4. They were all a little muddy.
Amp wise it seems like they added an Aguilar amp, but still only have one weird GK combo amp, no Mesa, no SWR, and no Eden.

They don’t have much bass gear now.
AmpliTube 5 amp simulation and guitar gear modeling software

Of the cabs they do include they have done 2400 IR’s per cab. It’s a robotic arm taking many positions and switching to many mics and rooms. This is great and nobody else offers it!

I do expect the re-IR all the signature amp cab packages and rerelease them as some new offering with an upgrade path to each. They just won’t be included in the current ‘5. I’ll wait for these.

As far as current cabs sounding muddy - I don’t hear it. Try moving a mic, a little can make a lot of difference.

I find myself using the Sigma IRs I purchased with the AT4 heads. They are brighter and have more bite, or rasp. The selection of AT4 cabs leaves me cold. I'm not an Ampeg guy, nor am I a 4x10 guy. I was much happier with the Mesa, GK, and Aguilar 8x10 cabs I purchased. The Markbass 4x10 is nice too.
I just think IK could have done better. I don't know if that will improve with AT5. I was really hoping for more amps.

I had a bit of a breakthrough with my NUX mini studio last night. Ive been only lukewarm with mine because it was so not user fiendly to update the firmware and the IRs were only OK....
Also I could only upload 44.1Khz 24B IR files (and they still didnt seem right so I kept reseting to default).

So last night I finally got around to hacking away at it again, I managed to get the thing to actually work as expected.
The firmware update instructions are correct (but you have to follow them exactly) but there are no instructions on the Editor. The key (if you guys havent already figured it out also) is to:
  1. Disconnect everything after firmware update.
  2. Start the editor on your computer.
  3. Power up the pedal engage it (click it on)
  4. Only then connect the USB cable between the pedal and computer.
  5. It might take two tries.
  6. You shoul get an error (ignore it, click it off)
  7. Go to the settings button on the editor (sprocket, top right)
  8. On the MIDI tab, NUX mini studio needs to appear in both input and output boxes.

Presto, everything works:
I can load any IR and they respond beautifully.
The IR Level button on the Editor now works (and is needed).
My favorites so far are the various DR Bonkers HypeReal Cab Mixes (at 96KHz_32B..!)
I really like the Shiftline SVT-810E as well.

So what I decided to do is keep all the stock the NUX IR in the BASS bank (and brought them to life by adjusting the IR level), then filled the entire ACOUSTIC bank with 810 IRs. The 96K32bit IRs are very very good (but need to be attenuated with the IR level control).
thanks for posting all of this, great info/insight. I think the NUX Mini Studio is a pretty decent little box for the money, but the documentation is pretty limited and the processes they show to use it or update the firmware are very specific.

Soooooo.....The Nux Mini Studio or the Shiftline Cabzone LE? I'm quite ignorant about these things.

Couple thoughts:
--Taken from both manufactures websites, Nux has 24 bit 44.1KHz audio quality and the sampling length is 1024 "points." Cabzone has 24bit, 48kHz WAVE PCM1, uncompressed. Impulse length: 940 samples (19.58ms). Is their something "better" about either pedal in audio quality?
--I don’t need the XLR out that the Cabzone X has.
--Mini Studio has the Space knob. No idea what it's supposed to do, though.
--A line level input would be great to have. The Cabzone has it. Not sure about the Nux? I didn't see it in any of their literature. I've emailed them but have not heard back.

Hi,
I'm looking for a CAB I.R. file of the famous Acoustic 361 cabinet, i'm using a CabZone LE, pretty sure someone else is looking for it also, let me know

Amplitube 5 has an IR with 2400 samples of an 18” acoustic horn cab
Look under cabs here AmpliTube 5 amp simulation and guitar gear modeling software

They only work with Amplitube, but if you’re clever you can run a sweep through Amplitube to create your own IR’s for your own use.

Hi,

Already got the Amplitube 5 and yes it sounds really good
I tried to see if i could get the file and convert it... found the files but no way to convert it yet

I was looking for the IR to put it in my CabZone Le, i have a few preamps on my pedalboard that i match with the right CAB IR, Broughton SV PRE and Shift line Ampeg_SVT-810E it's like sitting next to the amp

I have the Dicosimo 360+ preamp and i want to get the Cab IR to do the same.

I will take a look at maybe do a sweep.

Thanks

Wow - I didn’t know 5 was out yet. I thought it was only pre-order now.

In any case there’s a great tutorial and tool to create your own IR at
Video - Voxengo Deconvolver | Voxengo

It can work the same for Amplitube, move the mic in virtual space and record a bunch of sweeps.

If anybody has their own favorite cab and mic then this is worth watching to create an IR for your own loader.

Sorry

The space knob on the NUX is kind of like reverb, gives the impression of being farther from the cab (or in a bigger room). I like it.
There is no line in on the NUX. Dont like that (but I have a Rolls PM on my board).
The NUX documentation is second rate to say the least. I had a lot of trouble figuring it out. Dont like that either.
Once I got the latest update loaded I can run 96khz IRs and it does sound awesome. I like that a lot.
The user interface is pretty useful. I like that too.
The small form factor USB interface (and quick delivery) are the reasons I decided to try it instead of the cabzone.

Similar to mdesjardins68 , I run an SV-Pre into an 810 IR (Dr Bonker or Shiftlin) and its pretty impressive in my cans or in-ears.

But...it's just a matter of time before I get the new USB cabzone to compare against.

Hey everyone - I have a NUX preamp question that may end proving too devisive but I'll ask any way.
It's probably a question for it's own thread too so if too far off track let me know and I'll create its own thread.

I'm thinking I want to buy this preamp, even though it obviously has some issues with user-friendliness! My question is this.....I would like to run this last in my signal chain for 2 reasons.

1. The cab sim needs to apply last just before a mixing board
2. It has a dedicated XLR DI out

My only question - I have also been toying with grabbing a Broughton HP/LP filter pedal that only has an unbalanced 1/4 inch output - ideally I would put the HP/LP filter last in chain but would it hurt to place it before the NUX as 2nd last in chain....mostly just to clean up sub 40hz rumble and anything much higher than 4.5khz clank? would it still do the job as long as I'm not touching the bass and treble controls of the NUX which are higher and lower than I usually care to EQ any way?

@jcburn ,
The NuX NBP-5 has built in adjustable HP and LP filters. Also, the eq frequencies listed are for the MLD amp model. If you change to the AGL model, the eq frequencies might be more in line with what you may like.

Oh wow - that would essentially mean I don't need the Broughton, nor need to worry what order to put anything.
Sweet. I may need to speak to "Santa" tonight when the kids are in bed.

Thanks for this mdesjardins68

I have everything I need to start tinkereing (except Voxengo).

https://www.talkbass.com/members/seamonkey.45085/ I own an Acoustic 301 cab (same cabinet as a 361 rig without the power amp). Im recording some band stuff now, but Ill give IR capture a shot over the Christmas holidays (specifically the 301).

+1 for that video link from seamonkey
I was really wondering how to capture just the cabinet without the amp color, turns out you just swap it with a linear power amp, makes total sense.

Good luck with the process of it, and thanks for your contribution to the IR community :hyper::bassist::drool:

I might be a little late to the party maybe, but 3Sigma has an Acoustic 8x10 model in their bass cab lineup. Not sure if it's the 361 specifically though. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I snagged @dr bonkers MBGR 8x10 and Sula 2x12 IRs yesterday. Still tinkering around with these IRs, but so far... quite impressed with both, but the MBGR (Mesa Boogie Road Ready 8x10) in particular. I've only had maybe 30-60 minutes to do some comparisons with other fav IRs. I was able to add in a little grind with the SVT amp model in the HX Stomp, and holy crap it sounds nice with a pick. It'll be pretty killer for rock tones, but I still want to see what other tones I can dial in with it before I call it a "go to."

I'll see if it lives up to the Honest Amp Sim review of it being the Millenium Falcon of the bass impulse world, but so far I'm digging it a lot. Will report back, and maybe see if I can do an audio sample.

5sg.

I'm a big fan of the 3Sigma IRs.
Still haven't found the perfect bass sim for me. Still using heads into my interface.

I'd really dig some examples with a fairly flat mic, up close at cone if you ever have the time/ability 5SG. Most of the Mesa cab IRs I have had access to sound really mid scooped, boomy and clanky.....which isn't how I hear their cabs in real life. twice I've owned a Powerhouse 210, and although bright it was tight, mid focussed and not harsh at all.

I can't justify the new prices of Mesa cabs but man do they sound rad!!!

My favourite cab sim IRs (using them in a Shiftline Cabzone LE, through IEMs) are still the Aguilar DB115 and the Ampeg B115 by Redwirez. My favorite mics are the fairly neutral EV RE20, Neumann U47FET and the Earthworks TC30, all close up (3 inches) pointing at the cone. These get the most even, non boomy, non clanky response and the cab IRs themself sound really good.

These cab IRs are a really good in-ear representation of my Ashdown ABM speakers. the Ashdown's are proted 410 cabs, so not really in the same realm as the Ampeg or Aggy cabs but the overall affect is a very similar tone and feel. Somewhere right in the middle between modern and vintage!!!

I'm gonna grab the Nux preamp maybe around Xmas - looking forward to incorporating that into my chain for even more control and versatility but right now I'm fairly happy with my direct pedal board tone.
