Cab Impulse Response Megathread

I owned the Dr Bonkers Aguilar DB 810 , to load my Darkglass element , but there is really lot of choice in the folders . I'm really lost ..... Witch files do you using ?
It is easy to get lost in all the options. Theoretical it shouldn't matter which speaker you pick. Mic choice and placement takes a lot of experience. I usually lean toward using the center of the speaker, when it comes to placement. Mic type is personal preference.
I believe they have premixed IRs. That should cut back on the confusion a little. Match your sample rate to your project in a DAW. I don't know what the sample rate is on a device like the DG. Use the highest one and see what happens.

Thank you for this answer, I have the impression that the preMix IRs sound less fat than the others with cab + Di or cab + Amp + DI. This is especially for live use in my case with two lines, one with my noble DI and the other with the noble's amp output which goes into the darkglass to simulate an 810 Aguilar .

That's likely due to the cab's low roll off and low pass filtering when mixed.

Software is free for Windows and Mac
Two notes Torpedo Wall of Sound ( WoS )

So even though I may not be able to use the Mesa bass cab IRs with my current IR loader, can I use the pack in conjunction with the free WOS VST plugin in my DAW for recording? I use a real simple pedalboard - Scarlet 2i2 - Audacity set up for bass lines, would be great to be able to try these IRs out on some recording.

Has anybody sneakily captured the Darkglass Cabsims as wav IR's?

Just got a Darkglass X Ultra - the cabsim is on all the time on the headphone out and I was wondering what each cabsim did. Ran a measurement sweep using REW on the pedal with my USB audio interface with different cabs loaded - see left hand panel below. You can view the IR by clicking on the Impulse button (use %FS view) above the main window; and save an IR .wav file from the File->Export menu.

Once you audition an IR with a Mic and placement and decide you want to try it on your current IR loader, you can convert it to a "static" IR for simple loaders. It won't be dynamic anymore, it will be a single static IR which includes the cab and single mic position you selected. Simple IR's also won't do stuff in the time domains like chorusing.

Waves, and Voxengo, REW, and others provide tools to convert any wave to a regular IR.

This of course does open the IR to internet abuse, so don't share the IR if you do it. It's only for your personal use. Check your license agreement you sign when you accept usage of an IR or software but don't take legal advise from me.

I bought 8 or 9 Dr. Bonkers impulse responses which I'm extremely happy with because they sound phenomenal & I got them on sale which I just checked is still going.

All the packs I bought were bass IR's with 2 of them being guitar IR's because I bought one Sunn guitar by accident & 1 Marshall guitar pack on purpose because it was a dollar with change so I chucked them in there thinking it couldn't hurt.

I actually wasn't even mad I accidentally bought the Sunn guitar pack instead of the bass one because I came back & got the bass one after trying the ones I bought on my first round of transactions.

Tried those then came back for 2 more transactions, so I ended up with a ton of IR packs that I'm so happy with that I can't wait to buy more as soon as I can. My favorite were the Mesaboogie Roadready, Aguilar, Sunn & SWR.

I'm even going to grab more guitar packs too because the 2 I got sound great with my guitar which isn't all that great so I'm ecstatic about that. Dr. Bonkers has some truly unique stuff especially the mics he uses. The choice mixes & hypereal impulses in there sound kickass!

I think it might be time to invest in some more Dr. Bonkers IRs.....Its been a while since I looked at this thread. Since last time I updated my IR loader to the Shiftline Cabzone X (I was using the Cabzone LE). I really like the better construction of the unit, and having the DI out to use at the end of my chain for FOH use is exactly what I needed.
I'm not sure at this stage whether the poweramp SIMs add anything that I'm liking at this stage but it's nice to have them. They do alter tone slightly and change the harmonic content in the signal as a pushed tube power amp would but as far as IRs go, the ones I like best are the ones that don't colour the sound too much.
@Bonsist - I'm interested to hear your opinion on the Aggy 810 and Mesa Road Ready cab IRs. The Dr. Bonkers demos don't really work for me - I can't really gauge what the IR is doing compared to the naked tone.

Definitely agree that you should 'specially during the sale. He has a 2020 free pack which is also pretty amazing, it gets use from me for sure so definitely grab that too.

Very nice of him to just give this pack away.
Free and Sampler Priced Guitar Cab & Bass Cab Impulse Response...

I had to buy some soon as heard what's in the free pack, wasn't even mad I had to pay a small fee for each transaction because I was biting my thumbnail thinking, should I grab another 2 or 3 packs or what? But I couldn't hold myself. Just make sure you look over your order to make sure your choices are what you want before you hit the order button.

My line of advice when ordering is get as many packs in a single transaction since they're on sale & try to buy them all at once to get over that small fee if bothers you. I was just treading the waters lightly, but I realize there's no reason to, that man is not jippin' you on quality or quantity.

I actually just grabbed some free cabzone IR cabs recently on my IR hunt.

I actually love IR's that color the tone just as much as the ones that keep it mostly clean.

That's funny because I didn't really like the demo's much either but then again hearing the same songs over & over again when shopping for IR's somehow lands your years in the burnout department. The demos don't do the IR's justice though. He doesn't even really advertise, people just talk about his stuff which is how I found it.

I got both of those & the Orange 8x10. I gotta say they are all super high quality, the Aguilar color the sound a lot & give it bite, which I like. I'm into bass tones with some mid snarl & Aguilar seems to have that with a bit more tightness to it. But the Mesa sound very loose & fat.

Orange cabs too but those seem to have more mid scooped out. IMO Ampeg IR's do a great job of giving you neutral tones with bottom end.

Hey man - thanks for the detailed response. I probably should have mentioned I've definitely been aware of Dr. Bonkers for quite some time. I tried the "Lockdown" pack early on last year and like some of the IRs in there. Since then I have bought the Sunn 215 and SWR 112 packs which sound good, and a first other "oddities" packs that I thought would sound good, but in the end didn't work for me.

I think I will definitely give the Aguilar pack a go from your description. Sounds like the kind of tone I like. I think I will also try the Ampeg 115 pack.

just out of inetrest for anyone wanting to answer....are you all using these IRs into a recording DAW, for use with in ear monitoring or to add some flavour go to FOH? I'm kinda using all three and find that for recording and IEMs the IRs sound identical, but using them in a FOH system usually gets a different "experience".

No problem! Oh cool, I've got those 2 as well. But the full cabs & half cabs are my favorite because they just have a better & fuller tone. I still like the smaller amps tone too, don't get me wrong. But they always land you in the familiar realm.

If you intend to record high gain metal or rock then you should go for the bigger cabs because it's all about gain & volume over there. If not, then a half cab or less would do imo.

Actually since talking to I went by to look at some more then ended up buying 10 more packs! LOL I couldn't believe the sale was still on since I went shopping with him last month so I couldn't hold myself again but now I really know how to order from his site.

As I was adding stuff to my cart I noticed at the bottom there was a message saying if you buy 3-9 packs at once then you get a 5% discount, but if you get 10 packs then you get a 10% discount.

I was at 9 packs in my cart a couple of hours ago going "damn man, that's going to run me $99" until I read that disclaimer, added another pack and it brought my total down to $96 while giving me basically a free pack at the end. So yeah, I kinda wish I knew that the first 4 transactions LOL

I just got the Ampeg 8x10 SVT so I definitely recommend that as well. I got some nasty tones & got good mid range from basically all of them by using the EQ in my amp head or a post FX eq. The mic positions do alot of difference to from IR file to the next using the same cab, so one Aguilar IR to the next will differ where one is fuller & rounder than the next VS one being more tight & agressive. But Dr. Bonkers covers all basses.

I go directly into an amp sim with an ir loader then some post fx, most the time. Sometimes I go into a preamp, or a real amp before the loader. Been thinking about getting a DI box to be honest.

You mentioned you like using a power amp? Can you explain to someone as basic as me what that's all about? I've been hearing more about it lately but it's kind of new to me. I have an old crown power amp but I never thought to use it with my bass guitar. Only used it to power a small live setup in the past.

I tried to edit my comment earlier but it doesn't let me now. I meant to say that the different mic options make all the difference.

I find myself with my own demo in the back switching different IR cabs out with the same amp settings surprised at how much the different mics are changing the tone of my bassline giving it's own character within the mix.

I only just now started messing around inside the single files & mixing 2 cabs together in my loader because I was just stuck on the hypereal & choice mixes.

A lot of the time just one cab does the trick but you can always go deeper with these by mixing 2 IRs. I like to slightly offset the volume of each cab if I'm mixing them together in my loader. '

These cut through the mix nicely, they have lots of character. Each IR file differs from the last unlike some I've had before where cycling though 3-5 of them has barely any audible difference.

I use these mostly for metal so I run the gain hot & process them with some grit even though some of them pretty gnarly without adding much of anything at all in post.

Chucking some Pultec emulation over the top sounds amazing because you can boost low end with about a 200hz or so scoop by tweaking the attenuation which you usually probably do anyways manually with EQ's on your own to remove some mud while keeping lows nice & thick as bass should be where a Pultec keeps that technique in mind & applies it automatically. Very handy especially for bass guitar.
