Cab Impulse Response Megathread

You rehearse on a PA ?
I have an Alesis 12" drum monitor, wich is the same as the Headrush 112. 3sigmas had just too much high end and had a lof of feedback wich the noise gate couldn't hold that well. Lancaster audios Mesa Powerhouse IR is much more balanced sounding.

Still thinking of trying out ML Sound Labs Ampg pack. Does anyone have any comparison? I love their guitar IR's.

Would love to see someone do some IR for the Aguilar SL 112. Even the the other SL series cabinets.

I own an SL112, and an Epifani 112 as well. So it would be nice to have those that I could load into my two notes torpedo cab M.

Same here. Is there anyone offering SL112 IRs? Seems like 99% of the IRs for bass are for metal guys playing with a pick...I'm looking for something that can do jaco, tony grey, gwizdala, matt garrison...

I haven't found that to be true. And if it were true then 99% of cabinets would be built for metal guys playing pick ;)

It really does matter where the mic is placed to take an IR. Amplitube IR's are fabulous because the do some many mic positions Unfortunately they can't be loaded into other IR players, only Amplitube.

You don't see grey, gwizdala or garrison playing through 8x10 cabs...

Am I missing something here? As a metal guy who occasionally plays with a pick, and almost always with distortion, the benefits of a cabsim/IR are twofold, in that it cuts the sub-lows and tames the distorted highs without sounding muddy. My knowledge of cabsims is admittedly somewhat limited, but are you seriously searching for cabsims that will make you sound like Jaco, Grey, and Gwizdala? Or did the joke just completely fly over my head?

By the way, if 99% of cabsims actually were made for us metal guys, it would be a hell of a lot easier to find one that works for that single, solitary, stagnant, unchanging genre simply known as "metal".

try the Celestion IR's both their own driver range and also the Celestion Bergantino IR's.
I find the playing style variants particularly satisfying

I play a markbass amp through a pair of aguilar SL112 cabs. All I want is a cab IR I can download to my modeler that has the sound and feel of the SL112s so I can digitally track from my modeler and get a similar sound to what I get through my actual rig.

For those who have the Nux Mini Studio.
I have not been successful at getting the pedal to connect to my MacBook Air.
I follow the instructions properly and even went out and bought a usb cable that transfers data.
It does not recognize the pedal no matter what I do.
How were you successful in updating your firmware?

I had the same issue as you, but with a PC. Hooked it up to my laptop and it all worked.
Go figure.

Question/Recommendation on an IR cabsim pedal for live use.

I’ve been looking at pedals from the Nux, Valeton, Mooer to the Darkglass, DSM, and HX Stomp. I just read that some people here wouldn’t want to use the Nux Mini Studio for live use. Why is that? And are there IRs or cabsims that people would use for live shows or church services?

I've used a Nux Solid Studio for live use (I work in a theatre and at this play/musical we use headphones as monitors) It has been working without problems yet. The IR I've used is a Dr. Bonkers' Acoustic 301(one of his HypeReal mixes). I just like the tone of that cab.

i know this is somewhat off topic but I had one of the higher end nux looper pedals and it was very buggy. It would sometimes hang when overdubbing a 2nd or 3rd loop and when that happens, the only solution is to power off and on. Very annoying on a 5-6 minute loop you are working on. Their support was horrible and basically refused to even attempt to help unless I made a video of the issue. Since it didn't happen every time, this meant I would have to just leave the video recorder on all the time. I ended up just returning it and vowed never again to purchase a product of theirs.

Which pedal of theirs was it?

Similar issue with the Nux Mini Studio I purchased. Tried hooking it up to my macbook air. I bought a proper charging / data cable and followed the instructions and the pedal would not connect to the firmware updater.

One dude on FB messenger and one dude via email was attempting to troubleshoot it the past 3 days. One of them confirmed my mini studio would hook up via midi on my computer, but not with the firmware updater app.

The piece of junk is getting sent back.

I had a problem similar with the NUX MG-300 modeler. The problem went away when I used a USB 2 port instead of a USB 3 on my laptop. Loved that pedal, but gave it away to my granddaughter when she got into guitar. By that time I had the flagship MG-30. Incredible machine for guitar or bass! It kicked everything else off of my pedalboard.

Thanks so much to everyone on this thread.

I had all my vintage analog gear stolen from a “secure” storage facility and the thought of replacing everything was somewhat daunting to me. And, frankly, lugging all that gear around wasn't as appealing as it used to be. As much as my Mini Mo was my favorite piece of equipment ever, I decided to delve into the digital world and now have a Line 6 Helix Floor.

Of course, as this thread points out, the digital world of IRs has its own kind of daunting. As I was reading through the posts, I went to the Celestion Digital Bergantino link to purchase some IRs and the menu asked which files I wanted based on the product I owned. When I selected Line 6, the download option presented itself as 48.0 KHZ / 200 ms. My question is whether that file spec is the “best” for Line 6 or simply their recommended option?

I have other IRs (e.g., Dr. Bonkers) and always just chose the higher numbers assuming they would sound better. A quick Google search seems to suggest that Celestion’s recommendation is best. At this point, I am mostly experimenting with amps and cabs. My speaker system is the Line 6 StageSource L3T 1400w speaker. I do not have the time to go down the many rabbit holes this technology offers (as much as I would love to). I’m just trying to get a basic yay or nay from the TB community as to whether the 48/200 is probably best for my purposes.

Any advice is appreciated and, again, thanks to all who so generously contributed to my limited understanding of this area.

Best,

MA

My experience with cab IRs of either 200ms or 500ms length is I couldn't tell the difference. there may be one - but I tried them side by side in slots of my IR loader (Shiftline Cabzone X) and I couldn't pick it. That may be due to the fact I think the Shiftline website states that the Cabzone X only samples the first 20ms/1000 samples of any given IR file so that may be why. Other loaders may sample longer timeframes.

I always selected mono 24bit 48kHz files too - I didn't try files of a different format.

@Music Attorney
I'd recommend you not stress out too much over which IR sample rate/bit depth to use.
Continue to use the recommended IR file specs for your device. If the chosen IR loads onto your device, that's the main part of the battle. From there the IR loader algorithm will, behind the scenes, translate that IR .wav into what it needs to function properly if it varies at all from the suggested tech spec. So, if it loads and works, you're good. IR lengths that exceed the IR loader's maximum IR length (a 500ms .wav loaded into a unit max 200ms IR capability) will automatically truncate the additional length.

The discussion had between cabinet IR techs and end users regarding IR length is interesting. Functionally, IIRC, any IR longer than 20-40ms will suffice for capturing the tone of a speaker. Longer IR lengths will include artifacts of the environment (room reflections) which may or may not be desirable. FWIW, there are few truly "reflection free" IR speaker captures (RFIR), due to the technical aspects and space requirements of how those IRs are captured.

All this probably matters more to guitarists than bassists, since it involves how desirable it is to have long IRs which capture the "in the room" aspects of tone & reflections of a given space. Whether you are served just as well by adding reflections with delay or reverb effects is a subjective matter.

Fractal Audio is at the forefront of hardware devices which is able to utilize very long IRs for the purpose of adding room reflections. Read about it here if you care to: Impulse responses (IR) - Fractal Audio Wiki

Thank you jcburn and jimfist. Very much appreciated. Remarkably, I actually understood what you wrote jimfist (at least I think I did) and it was very helpful to my understanding.

Definitely not a stress thing. I just play music for the love of music and try to avoid rabbit holes in this area. I get enough of those in my own ;-) It was just a curious question and the feedback I received from both of you put this to bed for me.

Again, also a thank you to all who came before and shared.

Best,
MA
