Just note that disconnecting the tweeter on some cabinets with poor (incorrect) crossover design can cause instability in some amps because the crossover contains impedance compensating components that are improperly calculated.

Yup.

I always put damping resistors on the parallel legs of my highpass filters so if a tweeter or mid goes open-circuit, the amp won't see a near-short.
 
You want to spend 150 bucks on a nice eq that will only approximate solving the problem vs a $5 jack and $15 cable that will 100% completely solve it?
I suppose that depends on what you consider the problem to be. For me I think it's more likely to be on the lines of ''I want reduced HF response for this song" rather than "tweeter makes it sound bad" so disabling the tweeter - or better perhaps bypassing the crossover - seems like a rather a blunt instrument.
And might disabling the tweeter safely, even when amp is delivering high power, require a bit more than 20$ of components?
 
Well, we're talking about using distortion/fuzz/whatever. Which often sounds brittle/harsh/etc... through a tweeter. So if you have some good 10s or 12s that have reasonable mid/high respsonse, you might just need the tweeter to get that extra bit of highs way up top that just adds definition and bite for clean/slap kind of stuff. But once you kick in your germanium fuzz that will sound awful. So you kick out the tweeter from the footswitch and now the 10s or 12s are running full range and everything sounds great.

Im not a crossover or amp designer, but it seems like it should be possible to just have a switch that takes the entire crossover network out of the circuit (with the tweeter being on the other side of that), and passes the full range signal through to the woofers.
