Cabronita Cantina

Gonna revive an old thread here and post my cabronita

I have a lovely black Fender Cabronita Bass I bought new several years ago.
Happy with everything about it except the sound of the pickup. Just not my thing. Consequently it doesn't get used.
I have been considering changing the pickup- I have some spare TBird pickups of various types, including a chromed one which is wound to 66 specs- fitting of which would require routing. Not a deal breaker but not preferred, I guess.
Do TV Jones pickups fit straight into pickup cavity of a Cabronita?
Any comments on the various model TV Jones pickups would be appreciated. I like P Bass, TBirds, Ric tones and play rock.

Yes, TV Jones are drop in ready. Installed a ThunderBlade on my Cabronita. To my ears it sounds a lot like the original with a bit more there, there. Round punchy lows and shimmering highs that really blossom when digging in. I love the tone, as do my band mates.

Thanks, guys. Much appreciated. I am glad the TV Jones ones drop right in- I thought they would, but wanted to check
The original pickup to me is lacking something and is too nasal to my ears. I feel it doesn't hit hard enough for mine.
I have changed lot's of pickups in different basses, it is a question of finding one that meets my tastes.
Is the Thunderblade as solid as a TBird pickup or a P Bass split, for example?
The Cabronita is such a great platform to work from and the neck on is mine perfect and exactly to my taste. It is a shame that it doesn't get used.
So I figure a pickup transplant is in order.
Here's my Cab for the record.

To my ears, the thunderblade is closer to a split coil P sound than any of the other major "types." It definitely isn't the same though. It has a similar overall musicality, but it seems like it's more "fat" and "articulate" at the same time. Not sure how it could be both, but somehow it is.

Never played a TBird and haven't experienced a split coil for over 25 years, so can't comment on the comparison to the TV Jones. But I've never played the ThunderBlade [I have two] and felt it was lacking in any way.

Any thought about changing strings? TI flats really bring out the best on mine.

Thanks for that. I have had a couple of different sets of flats on it- currently actually strung with the TIs. They are a bit better but still not what I am looking for. I also am not fond of the feel of TIs in general, although I do use them on a couple of vintage basses to minimise fret wear.

Hi all,

Cool to have found this thread. I love cabronita basses. This cabronita was custom built for me and has been my number one bass for years. I had it built after trying my friends custom shop cabronita porazzo. The mim and squiers weren't out back then.

I've strung it with Ernie ball flats, that works great for me. I'd love another one with rounds on it though, would searching for a second hand mim be advisable, or could I just as wel buy the squier? Third option is to have the guy that built this one build another, but that could take a while. Any advice?

Cheers

He's called Angelo, the brand is Panucci. He does custom work, lots of Fender type Guitars and les Paul's, but he's currently working on his own model. Mainly guitars though.
